It clearly was not Jerry Kill. Whoever it was, they clearly couldn't close the deal. :(

Jerry Kill seems like a solid guy, and he'll probably be a solid hire. The problem is not him. It's that at this point in our history we needed more then solid. We needed a HR. And that's what Maturi promised. At worst, it seems we could have had Phil Fulmer or Randy Shannon. They may not have been home runs, but they would have been a lot closer then Jerry Kill. Whether this hire will turn out well remains to be seen. But from a PR and public enthusiasm standpoint, Maturi has failed.

He couldn't believe Mike Grant was stupid enough to state that he'd be interested.

I think at first Maturi was surprised Jerry Kill was interested because we were way out of his league. Then we hired him.

In all seriousness if I had to guess I would say Mullen.

My guess would be Shannon because at that point he was still coaching at Miami.

Petersen and reported buy out issues?

Why didn't we hire him then?
I have no idea. I like Kill more than I like Shannon, however. Shannon did less with more. Kill has done more with less. Shannon probably deserves a second opportunity and he may be successful but it won't be here.
