but its cool we'll just bash them and criticize them for them to read. Seriously we have threads bashing players on our board, not just posts. not very inviting to the players we "cheer for". stay classy people.

So, do you guys know players read this board sometimes?

And they do like most of us do...they laugh their asses off!!!!

Go Gophers!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Say, did you know that the players can sometimes hear negative comments coming from the stands? I think we should never boo, or criticize in any way, any players, or coaches, for that matter. In fact, opposing players and refs can hear the crowd as well. Let's all preserve a respectful silence at all times, and not burden anybody by discussing sports in any way.

psst... as I know you're not a hypocrite, GGE, I think it's best to let you know that some of the people who criticize the players will READ THIS THREAD! Better delete it, as soon as possible. Don't want to hurt any feelings.

funny, but seriously, other boards dont do this, like "rodney suggestions"? really, do you not think he already knows what he needs to do, do you not think tubby has told him what he wants out of him?

When you are a major college athlete, you expect things like this to happen.

I don't think anyone is telling ESPN to stop reporting negatively about Cam Newton because he is a "college athlete" and I am pretty sure EVERY player watches ESPN. When you are in the public eye, people are going to talk about you

If people on here were bashing kids personally or attacking their character, yes, that is a huge problem. But saying, "Rodney would be so much better if he could develop a 15 foot pull-up jump shot" I don't think is going to hurt too many feelings. When you are a projected lottery draft pick, people are going to talk about every tiny piece of your game, NBA scouts are going to talk about you in public, maybe on ESPN, about what you don't do well. NBADraft.Net offers extensive information to the weaknesses of every potential draft pick, should this not be allowed either?

Should we maybe not talk positively about them either? I am sure Trevor knows he is a beast, and Tubby tells him he is a beast, lets stop talking about it. Gosh, today on twitter Damian Johnson told Trevor he needed to develop post moves. Should Damian no longer be allowed to tweet? I mean, Trevor read that! I think Trevor knows what he needs to do and Tubby told him, why is Damian budding in?

No one, not one person, to my knowledge has criticized a player for their integrity, work ethic, character, etc. but when you play a sport that 15,000 people come watch every night and watch on TV and ESPN is there and all the local media is there, your game is going to get talked about, positively and negatively. It is that simple.

As a fan, I think we should try and not bash our team as much as possible. At the very least we shouldn't come on here for the sole purpose of hating on the team we supposedly cheer for. But, at the same time we should definitely be able to criticize poor performance. That's why we come on the board - to discuss and have debates about all sorts of issues regarding the basketball team. It would be a serious detriment to the forum if we all came on here with nothing but sunshine and rainbows about the Goph players and the Goph team in general.

That said, the players should know most of us are not credible (as Don said)...and just laugh it off. They could also use it as encouragement to develop and prove us wrong. Who knows - freedom of speech is pretty awesome isn't it? We all can come on here and pretend we are coaches, or at least credible experts on the game, but at the end of the day most of us don't know squat.

+1 Very well put.

   and let's all :drink: to that quote from KSBGopher!!!!!

:clap::clap::clap: I Agree!!!

All I know is what I see on TV and absorb via watching other games and message boards. At the end of the day I know nothing! Go Gophers! I support the individuals and team to the end.

Bring on the Big Ten :D

Every board I have visited (Wisconsin, Iowa, Penn State, Texas,...) has threads blasting players or coaches (shouldn't be on team, big disappointment, needs to work on x, wasted scholarship, run him off, ...). I think GopherHole is one of the more civil boards.

I do not like personal attacks. Posters should not write something about someone that they would not say to that person's face. For example, notice how the slams on Myron have decreased since Myron is officially posting here.

Some posters want to stir up sh$t. They are not really Gopher fans. They post negative remarks disguised as Gopher fans. Hopefully, the players realize this. Also, for every negative poster there are many more positive fans lurking.

Besides, most of us were never D1 athletes, so who cares what we think.

Obviously the players are subject to criticism on here. I think we can all admit that a lot of the stuff on here is way too harsh or personal though. A lot of people (including me) go overboard to the point that if I were one of the players reading it, it would be pretty hurtful (even without knowing the people saying the stuff).

While I don't think we need to be savaging any of the players on the team we all root for, I don't really see many instances of that occurring. Is the 'Suggestions for Rodney' thread really ripping him a new one? Didn't seem that way to me. I don't think anyone expects him to read it and take it to heart or anything. It would probably better be titled 'Things I wish Rodney would do' but who cares? Anyway, this is big-time college basketball and I would hope the guys that do read these boards are able to chuckle at them rather then be offended by a bunch of well-meaning, know-nothing fans like us.

i mean but think about it, from my perspective, lets say im ralph sampson, i read that im soft, ill never be what my father is, i dont know how to score on the low block, im a mental midget, at some point i think thats got to get to you. why do i play in front of fans that bad mouth me at any opportunity, why give them my best effort? Why recommend the U of M to recruits? At kentucky they'll defend Cousins to the point of insanity. not saying we have to go to that extreme, but at what point do we accept that rodney williams will take time to develope, micheal jordan doesnt exist in every player, and bad nights happen?

You can't be serious?!?!

Have you ever read Cats Pause? One All-American has a bad game and there are a dozen posters talking about egging his dorm room! Kentucky is a terrible example...talk about how fanbases treat their players when they're playing poorly...I've never seen more brutal comments/posts than those on the UK boards.

Whether players read the board or not should not factor into what discussions occur. Since this is a place for discussion. So a poster should be able to present their topic without it being seen as bashing. Because criticism is unavoidable, and whether its has any validity at all can only be found out during the course of said discussion. Besides criticizing a player does not mean you like the team less than anyone else.

Yay! Gold stars for everyone!

What the *&^!#*&^!#*&^!#*&^!# is the point of a forum if you're just patting players on the back all the time? I thought forums were for constructive discussion, whether that's positive or negative. The Suggestion for Rodney thread is the very definition of constructive discussion, and as long as Rodney doesn't have the maturity of an 8 year old I'm sure he would agree wholeheartedly. Why don't the people who have a problem with constructive criticism and discussion that goes past back patting start their own forum where they can discuss how every single Gopher is going to be a perennial NBA all star?

I can't speak for everyone, but I think people are mainly referring to comments that wouldn't be considered "constructive discussion". I know go gophs is referring to the thread about Rodney. I don't see a problem with that as long as they remain constructive. The posts that I'm referring to that are out of line are the ones where people talk about us wasting scholarships on players, especially before even seeing them play. The people who bashed Chip before ever seeing him play look like idiots now. The nonstop posts bashing Rodney because he's projected to be drafted are absurd. People need to get over the fact that he's projected to be drafted at some point. That's what happens in pro sports. Tons and tons of players are drafted based on potential, not production.

You're talking about a select few people. It's not like 95% of fans are constantly ripping on the players. The attacks you're talking about ("he's worthless, what a waste of a scholarship", etc.) come from the minority of posters. There's nothing wrong with criticizing a player though.

No one is forcing players to read this board. It's their choice to continue reading or simply ignore it.

Do you all remember last Summer when some of the people on this board bashed Chip and Mav. like crazy before they even played a game? These players come here to represent the University of Minnesota and maybe the whole state. What some of the posters did here over the Summer was ugly.

Frankly, it may have done the oposite. We are not experts but we are fans. Anybody who has played sports can tell you that you cannot have a great game all the time. In fact, you may finish the whole season without having a good game. The best way to motivate these players is to cheer for them and point out to the things that we think they should improve. When you say Rod is not playing well because he is saving himself for NBA, you know nothing about sports and should call yourself a fan.

Go Gophers

Kentucky Boards??

The same smart people who had hatred for Tubby Smith??

The same fans who will sell their souls to the devil/used car salesman (Calipari)??

Fans have a right to share their opinions.

For example. Ralph is soft. Tubby knows this, fans know this, RS I II III and IV know this, Goldy knows this.

If I were Ralph this would piss me off and make me want to play harder. If a player is that fragile where they cant handle fans stating their opinion it says something about that player.

Roland, I dare you to say that to Ralph's face. You will end up in the obstructed seats at Williams Arena, compliments of the whole damn team.

This is exactly why a player shouldn't read these message boards. Unless you have a really thick skin and are very confident in yourself. Wouldn't it be great if they came on here and debated with us? Not that anyone would believe it was them anyway.

They honestly shouldn't be reading this board. Doesn't do anything for them at all good or bad.

I disagree. All U of M students should be required to read GopherHole thru a required remedial reading course GopherHole 101. Then follow that up with GopherHole 102 for debate practice.
