I was content to watch him slowly develop playing minimal minutes. But I guess he is now the back-up PG and will log some serious minutes. Is there any hope there? He looked OK what little I saw on Monday.

I would expect to see an awful lot of Al and Blake. Blake will play some point with MA getting spot duty (or no duty) in a close game. Hollins and Chip A will get a chance to step up in DJ's absence. We shall see.

There is no such thing as a "normal season" when it comes to Gopher hoops.

This whole thing with Devoe is such a dissapointment, he was one of the last players I expected to have a problem with. Hopefully Maverick can step up, because he's going to see an expanded role for the time being. Let's just hope Devoe can get it together soon, we are clearly a different team when he is not on the floor.

I think you are dreaming with Maverick being able to contribute at the B10 level. He is not that good. He might develop into a decent backup, but if he has to play more than a few minutes a game, the Gophs are in real trouble.

The tale of the tape --- or the DVR.

Perhaps the most impressive 3 minute run of the game for the Gophers came when Ahanmisi led the 2nd wave in the 2nd half against Winona. Gophers were leading 48-37 at the 13:50 mark. Ahanmisi replaces Nolan at PG. In the next 3 minute stretch, Maverick led 2 or 3 fast breaks, scored on a three pt play layup, had a great assist pushing the ball up court to Armelin for a 3pt shot, moved the ball well, played great help defense, forced his man into a turnover, helped to build the lead to 58-40, and took a charge before being replaced by Nolen at the 10:44 mark.

Pretty nice 3 minute stretch for any point guard - let alone a Freshman.

Completely agree. People were bringing down Maverick before they saw him play a minute on the court and he has to earn to his way into their good graces. If you start him from scratch though, he hasn't looked bad in his 2 games as a Gopher.

If Maverick gets any minutes tonight, I would expect turnover city.

He won't want any part of Rundles and Diggs.

I'm expect Nolen to get 34mins tonight, maybe Blake, Mav and possibly Chip will bring the ball up a few possessions.

+1

People! HE IS A FRESHMAN.

The basketball geniuses who evaluate a player having never seen him play or have watched him in a summer league game or two before the coaching staff has had any time to work with him don't lack for hubris, just good judgement.

Come on people, this is 2010. If a freshman point guard is not going to play like John Wall he's a waste of a scholarship.

I expect limited minutes from Mav and think Tubby will play him in situations where limited damage could be done, like most coaches would do with typical freshmen. Al at 35 minutes a game sounds pretty reasonable for now. Unlike last year when we had to go with three guards because we lacked big men, we might have to go with a bigger line-up and hope Rodney or Austin can handle the ball a little bit. To expect both Blake and Al to play 35 minutes over the long haul is a bit much for them. Someone will need to step up and dribble a little and someone else will need to make some threes. Let's just win some games.

I thought Maverick looked much more comfortable at the point against Winona than he did in Vancouver. He's improving. I can't ask more than that.
