For the first time in his tenure coaching the Gophers, Tubby Smith has lost four games in a row. And it could get worse, judging by the way his team is playing right now.

After the Gophers' 71-62 loss to Illinois on Thursday night at Williams Arena, Smith vowed to accept any criticism that comes his way after the program's worst stretch since the 9-22 season in 2006-07. But he said it's up to players to find a remedy.

Abouth Hoff....Smith said. "I don't know what it was. I just asked him, I just told him, 'Why don't you shot-fake and get a foul one time, please, during a game?' "

I said the EXACT same thing during the game. There were times, especially late, if he would have shot-faked and went to the basket he would have been fouled before. Teams do not expect him to go to the rack, so why not mix it up.

I have a lot of excitement about the Freshman though. They all play hard, maybe at times try to do more than they SHOULD, but at least their trying to get the ball in the hole.

I think in the middle of a game players do what they are comfortable doing, and they generally are comfortable doing what they practice over and over and over. and just from watching warmups I don't see many shot fake then a move- so how many drills do they do in practice that would get them comfortable doing it in a game?

I am paraphrasing and don't have the full quote but I remember the "avoid throwing your own players under the bus"

Tubby sounds very frustrated himself. Maybe he should join Gopher Hole, he would fit right in.

I'm a little uneasy with Tubby's comments.

I've been harping on the same thing for the past 2 years...Tubby is 2 years slower than Moses???

More proof, I should be coaching!

HIRE ME!!!

I agree - I think he has a tendency to throw his players under the bus. Blake? Who plays 36-39 minutes a game and is playing out of position... c'mon Tubby

He called Mbakwe out prior to last night's game, and he responded with one of his best games of the year. Hopefully the rest of them will respond the way Trevor did, otherwise I don't know what else Tubby can do at this point.

With everything that is on Hoff's plate right now I don't think he really had time to sit at his desk and go through his notes.

Tubby knows this team is in the tank and won't be coming out any time soon. This team is an ugly combination of athleticism without skill and skill without athleticism. Only Trevor and maybe Hoffarber and Sampson are athletic and skillful. Hoffarber is out of position and Sampson lacks college level aggressiveness.

Rodney, Hollins, and Armelin are all extremely athletic. Hollins and Armelin show flashes of collegiate level skill. They have a lot of work to do. Rodney lacks even the most basic collegiate basketball skills. He's one of the least skillful players I have ever seen get significant minutes at this level.

Ahanmisi lacks top level athleticism but shows some pretty good ball skills. He's got some game skills to work on but he'll come around to being a decent bench option when he matures. Lack of other options have forced him into more minutes than he should be getting. On most teams he'd be at the end of the bench as a freshman.

Then there is Iverson and Dawson. Two guys who lack athleticism and skill. Iverson has played two of the worst games I have ever seen the last week. He's an absolute drain on this team right now. Dawson, well he's a walk-on. Good for him for getting on the court.

This team isn't going anywhere. Mbakwe is the only impact player on this team playing at his appropriate position. Moving Hoff out of position is an awful thing to do. It limits his effectiveness and stagnates the offense. Two things define this team: Poor free throw shooting and turnovers.

Last night should be proof enough that this team doesn't deserve top 25 consideration any more. They are fundamentally awful. Teams like that are dead in the water. This reminds me of the Mason years in football. A huge buildup and a huge let down. What a shame.

You know why Blake rarely uses a shot fake? Because is one of the best 3 point shooters in country. When open, he will usually make more than half of his threes. When guarded, he still makes a high percentage. 3 counts more than 2 and is what college basketball is all about. Shoot more, Blake. And he didn't take one bad three last night. I am a lot more upset and worried about the ten layups and 7 free throws the team missed last night than an off 10 minutes from Hoffarber.

+1. Blake shooting a 25 footer with 2 guys in his face is much better than some garbage jump hook from Iverson, or a Rodney scud missle off the back iron. Much bigger problems to worry about.

A shot fake would likely get him more open 3's though and more free throws, which he excels at. Basketball is chess, not checkers, and sometimes you need to make your defende second guess himself.

whenever Blake catches the ball, the defender KNOWS he is going to shoot with space, so they jump at him immediatley, without hesitation. Shot fake = defender in the air = fouled on the 3 (possible 4 > 3 > 2 point play) or easy drive and dish. Bob Knight loves the shot fake for a reason. It keeps the defense honest. Shot fake, they jump, take a step to the left (or right), and shoot an even more open 3. The shot fake is a nice way to get defenders to stop playing right on you. While he'd likely score (a lot) on me, if I defended Blake, everytime he touched the ball I am jumping as high as I can with a hand in his face. No way he doesn't shoot it.

If a coach calls out a pro player in the NBA, the media goes crazy about how you don't do that and stuff...now we have our classy Tubby throwing people under the bus to the media? Yeah I'm all for singling out a player in the locker room and yelling at him, but to the media just say, "we had a few players make some questionable plays that really hurt us"...let the media speculate and don't give me what they want, damn Tubby

This is Tubby's team other than Blake and Al (and without those two we would be even worse). Other than Trevor and sometimes Ralph there is not a player on this roster that Tubby recruited that I think gives us a chance to win consistently. Rodney has flashes but so do 5th graders playing grade school BB. Chip shows he has some ability but Tubby seems to prefer Mav and Hollins. I have yet to see why. My point is that I think our talent currently playing is possibly the worst in the Big Ten.

We struggle defending the three and can't shoot the three other than Blake. Our free throw shooting is disgusting. I thought rebounding and defense was supposed to be a strength, but is it? And worst of all we are a TURNOVER machine.

I have ZERO problem with Tubby calling out guys during this horrible stretch. Especially seniors who play like horse manure! Hopefully this will light a fire up the team's arse.

If you think that throwing someone under the bus you must have been one of the kids who would cry when your coaches tried to help you get better.

Uuuh. So Tubby cannot point out the obvious now? Its not like Tubby was being unfair in his criticism.

I think the point is that most coaches take responsibility themselves when the team is not playing well. Has Tubby ever taken responsibility himself when the Gophers lose? Maybe he has but it seems
that most times Tubby is talking about how good his system is and everything would be OK if players did things his way. Normally, the top person in any organization takes full responsibility when things don't go well. Tubby is in his 4th year and these are his kids, his system, and his team. ( With the exception of a few Monson holdovers). If Tubby is not responsible then I don't know who is.

All the posters who think Tubby shouldn't react in this manner, ARE YOU KIDDING??????????????
What is he supposed to do, coddle his team and be happy and merry? It's ok Blake go ahead and unleash your array of terrible shots at terrible moments in the game.

Reporter: Coach what did you tell Rodney Williams at the Half?

Smith: Well I told him I couldn't be happier with his play, you know dribble 3x behind the 3 pt line and pass the ball. He really made his defender work.

Reporter: How do you feel about Colton Iverson?

Smith: Oh big Colt...heck of a game I told him it's ok to miss 99% of your shots from within 5 feet of the basket because 1% of the time you actually make them. I couldn't be happier!

Field goal % matters, Colt and Ralph are shooting nearly the same .465% average.

difference, however, is that Ralph's field goal % goes down taking more jump shots and shooting more in general. Colton's goes up because he shoots a lot of shots close to the basket, those have a higher % of going in for any player.

Point to foul ratio also matters. Seems like Colt has more fouls than points the last several games.
