Six Frosh Burn Their Redshirts

Wells is a surprise

Wells is the only one on the list that I didn't see coming. Did Carter play much yesterday? I never noticed him.

I was concerned about that too, but I'm guessing that it means that these guys will be used and the upperclassmen just don't fit the new system.

They never had redshirts, so they couldn't be burned........

Dr. Don would say......

......I knew a few girls in college who I could say the same thing about their bras.

  ......... also their panties. tough to take off panties when they aren't wearing any!!!!!! :drink:

I'm not at all surprised that Wells burned his RS. I would have been surprised had Thompson, Montgomery or Levine (other DBs).

It's always a tricky thing with balancing RS and playing guys right away. We've had a ton of threads about this. It's interesting just how much things in college football can have a longterm impact on a football program. For instance, part of Brew's problems with having to burn so many RS and not having normal rosters and lacking depth was what he walked into. Part of Kill's needing to play so many freshman is thin depth chart he walked into. A years from now, there could easily be thread entitled "I wish Derrick Wells would have gotten RS".

If you're playing out of necessity, it's not really burning a redshirt. If say, you're a project at WR (who will develop into a star) and you're playing at the end of blowout losses, that's a burned redshirt.

Vereen struggled yesterday, I could see Wells pushing him for playing time this year.

It was hard for me to single in and watch specific freshman yesterday. Could someone give me a run-down of how the above mentioned guys played? Thanks!

I keep wondering when Michael Carter is going to make a showing. Is he still not turning the corner? Its too bad with him having so much talent. Hopefully he can bring some consistancy to the table cause this team needs him.

I think it simply means the Gophers lack the depth, though the abilities of some I am certain do play into that.

Though being able to red shirt the freshmen would have been nice, I think this year this is simply a luxury Kill just does not have this year and maybe even next...to many other things to work on and can't get tripped up over it.

useless thread

I don't think that a RS situation is on the coaches mind right now. I can't imaging they thought they would be 2pts down with 2 mins to go with a Freshman QB at the controls with a chance to win. Do you honestly think that when Gray went down, the coaches discussed the merits of putting in someone other than Shortell because they didn't want to burn a redshirt? they are trying to make the best of what they have. If that means playing more freshman, so be it.

YOU CAN'T BURN A REDSHIRT UNLESS ONE IS GIVEN TO A PLAYER IN THE FIRST PLACE AND THEN THEY ARE PLAYED IN A GAME LATER ON!!!!!!!

It's a depth issue which will take a few years to resolve. As a badger alum I will not burn any red shirts. Go Gophers! 6 wins is a real possibility.

Well, since you are in the mood to argue semantics (emphatically at that). It would be impossible to EVER burn a RS.

Redshirts are given out at the end of the season. If a player hasn't played, he qualifies for being RS. However, that isn't a decision that needs to be made until the season is over. For example, had Parish beaten out Shortell at QB. We would have had Shortell as our 3rd string QB and we likely would have planned on RSing him (not playing him with the idea of keeping him eligible for a RS). However, that status (as a RS) is NOT given out until the season is over.

You can tell who the staff is planning on RSing by how they play their freshman year. However, it really isn't apt to say that you can't burn a RS unless one is given out in the first place because they can't be given out in the first place and they can't be burned.

But I think we both knew what people were getting at...

michael carter was not even a part of the active roster for the game

This is correct. People may have been told they have been "redshirted" at the beginning of the year, but the technical title is not applied until after the year.
