I was out tonight and came to the GopherHole to read a recap, and reactions to, the season opener. Unfortunately there was much more significant news. I've been reading the reactions to the Royce White saga, and find myself constantly hitting refresh looking for more concrete news on the situation.

Without knowing the details of what has gone on, I don't feel like I agree with many of the opinions I have seen tonight. I have seen probably the equivalent of a game or two of Royce White footage on the internet and the Jordan classic on TV, so I can't fully grasp just how good he is/can be. That said, those whose opinions I hold in the highest regard have a very high opinion of his talent on the court. I have to believe this is a HUGE loss for the program and those that are happy to see him go without expressing disappointment at what the Gophers are losing on the court seem like they are speaking way too quickly. On the other end of the spectrum are those who seem to downplay what already has occurred. I personally think Tubby acted correctly with the indefinite suspension following the shoplifting incident. I really hope(d) Royce will (would) get it together for himself, but also for the basketball program and its fans. I want to see a Big Ten power develop at Minnesota, and that is not going to happen without elite talent. It's not everyday that the Gophers land players with offers from the elite programs of college basketball, and losing one before he even played a game would be a huge blow to the program on the court.

I agree 100 percent. I said this before, but you don't build a Big Ten power by signing 3-star classes. Just ask Penn State, Iowa and Northwestern. The fact that Tubby's latest class consists of two 3-star guys is a little disturbing. Neither Hollins or Elliason are in the top 150. I realize that some 3-star talents become NBA-type guys, but that's the exception, not the rule. I think Tubby felt he didn't need to make a huge splash this year in recruiting because he thought he had Mbakwe and Royce for the next couple seasons. My how things have changed...

No doubt about it. Losing Royce would be a big loss. Still there are at least two straws we can grasp. First, White may have a huge up side. But, if we get Trevor back he is ready to make the most immediate impact at power forward. Second, getting rid of White now is probably going to cut our losses in the long run.

White wasn't going to lead the Gophers to the promise land. He's a lot like Kris Humphries in many ways.
