Let me start off by saying I am not happy with the state of Gopher football. Bad/unfortunate execution hurts. In the middle of the 4th year I had hoped for better results.
I am however going to give Brewster credit for not loading up on the marshmallows that was so prevalent during Mason's era and putting tough competion on the current and future schedules. I do have big doubts about whether Brewster can produce what he has been claiming since day one, but I strongly agree with his philosophy that to get to the upper/top level you have to play top competion. Mason would have always remained at best a low to mid level coach because he never challenged the program.

I will agree with the original poster on this issue.

I don't believe Brewster has this program any better off than it was with Mason. But, I do like the idea of at least one ranked, high profile opponent in our non-conference schedule.

After this year, with the addition of Nebraska to the Big Ten, I'm not sure I'll feel the same way.

More importantly, you have to BEAT top-level competition...

With our team, this is a near-guarantee for one extra loss. I would hate to be right on the cusp of that elusive January bowl, like Northwestern was so fortunate to receive, only to be denied by a game we didn't have to play. The B10 schedule is hard enough. We should play lesser teams until either we've proven we can beat them consistently, or we don't care about the bowl season, incl. January bowls.

Mason had improved the program to a level where the Gophers were at least relevant in the Big Ten. We may not have been elite but we at least had the chance to compete with some of the upper level teams. That has abruptly ceased under Brewster. I think the program has significantly regressed and I think we are all realizing just how much. The turnover in the coaching staff and constant shuffling of offensive philosophy has hurt the team's recruiting and ability to compete with teams in and out of the conference. Brewster has to go and Maturi right along with him.

Wrong. Please tell me the record Mason had against top Big Ten teams and get back to me. I love how the Masonites have M&G colored glasses when it comes to his tenure. The guy had ten years to move the program to next level and he didn't do it (and he even didn't think he could do it). Brew may not be the answer but Mason DEFINITELY was not. I would like to forget the historic implosions of his teams but they are unfortunately burnt into my psyche. Oh and by the way, no matter what you may think, we were not relevant under Mason in the Big Ten.

Mason's 32 - 48 Big 10 record is the primary reason he was fired. That, and the fact it didn't even bother Mason that he HAD a 32 - 48 record. And his teams were getting worse by the year. One of the reasons the Gophers haven't won a Big 10 championship in 40 years is we have too many fans who were satisfied with a 32 - 48 record.

Maturi finally replaced Mason with a coach who hasn't gotten it done so far. Big deal. That happens all of the time in every conference in the country. Hiring coaches is a gamble and it doesn't always work out (e.g. Notre Dame). Maturi's worst mistake since he has been AD is not that he hired Brewster. His worst mistake is that he waited too long to fire Mason.

Brewster has no signature wins, bowl wins, trophy wins & is 1-2 against Dakota teams...

So emotional...calm down...

It just amazes me, the number of comments you can make in a row that add nothing.

I get it, you think Brew sucks. You have stated it in numerous threads. You have done nothing but state that in past 3 weeks.

You are the worst type of poster...bitching while adding nothing.

And you have selective reading...which is an even worser type of poster...

You only read what you want to read instead of taking the whole. I have stated many positives this season as well as the negatives but seeing as we're 1-2 & loss to South Dakota at home just how many positives do you expect? How can you be satisfied with the direction Brewster is taking this program? We're pretty much a joke at this point & it's sad because the average persons perception on Minnesota right now is at an all-time low & barring a miracle Brew is gone & he doesn't even realize it in my opinion...

Well you've been following me so closely how could you have possibly missed any? LOL...

Stop it...let's continue to talk Football shall we?

Just as I thought.

Now you want to pretend you've been "talking football" when you have nothing in your quiver but an ever growing list of fire Brewster comments.

I'm not about to waste my time proving a point to you, lol...

Like I said...South Dakota was the end of Brewster barring a miracle...the rest of the College Football world can see what supposed "fans" can't see & it's a shame. We shouldn't have risked hiring a coach with no previous experience & in year 4 it's really starting to show...

I'm sick of Moral Victories. You should be too. Why are we happy that we kept it close with USC for 3 Quarters? Why? Why is that even a goal? You think Ohio State just tried to keep it close to USC? No...they wanted to beat USC & the fans expected their team too. Our fans are just happy we didn't get blown out. What happened to all that Rose Bowl talk?

When Brew was hired the expectations on this board were Pasadena...and now people are once again looking to "hopefully" win 5 or 6 games in Brew's 4th year...

My my my...how the expectations have lowered immensely...

Both mase and brew have been failures...all most of us want is a team that can be relevant-winning 7-9 games a year with an occaisional run at a b10 title and the bcs.....we could care less who the coach is, right??!! Love Brew's enthusiasm and drive but clearly he is not head coach material. Time to go get somebody else who can take what we have and make it better. Brew did everything right, except win. Unfortunately, that's the most important part of his job.
