Leave it to sports savant Dave Mona to come up with a startling comparison of Gophers and Purdue quarterbacks from the last 60 years. Mona researched back to 1956 and learned former Boilermakers quarterbacks—ranging from Len Dawson to Drew Brees—threw 1,340 touchdown passes as NFL/AFL players. Ex-Gophers have a total of five during the same period. Yes, five!

Minnesota’s Mike Hohensee threw four TD passes as a replacement player for the Bears during the NFL strike season of 1987. Gino Cappelletti, playing for the AFL Patriots, had one TD throw on a busted field goal attempt.

The Gophers’ total goes to six if Spergon Wynn is counted. Wynn played one season at Minnesota in 1996 when he attempted three of eight passes for no touchdowns, according to Sports-reference.com. Wynn, who transferred to Southwest Texas State, later played for the Vikings and threw the only NFL touchdown pass of his career for them, according to Wikipedia.com.

Go Gophers!!

You forgot to add that Brees has a rigged for television Super Bowl season. Good for him.

In the mid-80's South Carolina recruited Todd Ellis out of Greensboro, NC. Ellis was a hot property out of high school. He said a part of the reason that he went to SC was because the guy who recruited him, Jim Washburn, stressed that there had never been a great Gamecock QB. Ellis played well at times, not great, but it seems like a recruiting strategy that might be worth a try. Then again, Gopher coaches might already use that tactic. Anyway, I am waiting for a QB that leads us to many great victories. Especially a QB who can rally us to some great come from behind wins. He's got to be out there somewhere.

Certainly is a staggering number. Would lead one to assume that it equates to wins at the college level also.
My math could be off, but bottom line looks like Purdue has 321 victories in that span with those QB's and the Gophers have 309.
In that stretch Gophers made it to more bowl games.

Go Gophers!!

We went to the Rose Bowl in 1960 and 1961. Maybe we should start a site on the last 100 years. I have not checked but my guess is we have a wining record against Purdue. Dave needs to check that one.

Go Gophers

I wonder how many yards Gopher RB's have run for in the pros as opposed to RB's from Purdue?
(yes, I know they had Leroy Keyes and Mike Alstott, among others)

Mike Pruitt alone might have come close to rushing for more yards than all the Gopher backs combined.

I forget the stat but someone had one on Alabama's recent QBs and the NFL that was pretty ugly.... but they win national championships.
