"While he was ineligible to play basketball at Minnesota last year, Trevor Mbakwe did well in the classroom, posting a grade-point average better than 3.0. In fact, the basketball team might have one of its best academic quarters in a long time. Mbakwe tells friends he never did visit Memphis or any other school as reported, and that he wants to stay at Minnesota. Gophers athletic director Joel Maturi, who wouldn't allow Mbakwe to play last season because of a felony charge, said that if the Miami courts continue to postpone the trial like they have, he will take another look at his decision and allow Mbakwe to be eligible for the 2010-11 season.

Meanwhile, while there are rumors that Kentucky is after former Mr. Basketball Royce White, and the word is that White will have to attend junior college in order to get eligible after dropping out of Minnesota in the middle of the semester. Gophers coach Tubby Smith said he hasn't decided whether he would take White back. However, they did meet some time ago. You want my opinion? I believe if White can get the academic OK that Smith will give him another chance."

Go Gophers!!

If the decision to bring White back truly is being stalled by Tubby, than this is appalling. C'mon Tubby, do you want to win or run the cleanest most mediocre program in the country?

I'd rather win clean than be a slimeball like Calipari in Kentucky and do everything possible behind the scenes to win at all costs. We dont need anymore wins vacated by the university. I'd take ten mediocre dedicated players over a half hearted talented player any day of the week.

I think most schools would gladly take Royce White. Its rare that we sign a five star recruit, so why is Maturi being such a d*** when Royce has paid a big price relative to what he did? Winning has always been secondary for Maturi and as long as he is the AD, mediocrity is success. .500 Big Ten seasons are a roaring success for Maturi and that's the best we should expect.

It would seem that White has to make a decision and declare his intent before it makes any sense for Tubby to commit. There are things White has to do before he can attend, if he doesn't do it what's the point of Tubby saying anything.

Kids like White have never really had to make tough decisions, they always get made for them by circumstance. Tubby is smart enough to know that White can't succeed until he makes the decision to succeed. Tubby can't make that decision for him. And so he must wait and see if White can do that or if he takes the easy road and let's a decsion get made for him once again.

My guess is that he can't do that and he'll move on to a new place where he doesn't have to answer for his bad past choices. He'll be a little wiser and make it through a season before history repeats eventually. Given his talent he'll find a way to make a living playing at a lower level than he could have. Eventually maturity will catch up to him and he might rise to a better level.

I guess it's up to him as to how long it takes him to become a man. We'll just have to watch and wait.

Royce White cannot play anywhere (even Minnesota) in the 1st semester, except at JuCo.

He needs to restore his academic eligibility to play Div I basketball.

So the decision is all on Royce.

Why must you rain on the White-aphobes with facts?

They want to blame Tubby or blame Maturi or anyone but RW and they believe RW to be the greatest College hoops recruit since the Big O.

I wish RW would sign with an agent so the RW threads and comments would just go away.

Trevor Mbakwe Impersonator on Memphis Campus?

The judge is growing impatient - the 'Miami courts' would like nothing more than to get this thing underway.

Date for the plea is July 14, with a trial hearing set for July 26 as of now.. would have been nice to have the trial begin earlier in the month, when the county's name is 'changed' for a week in honor/respect of another former Marquette player.

That claim caused me pause too. Trevor definitely visited Memphis and it wasn't to tour the Elvis Mansion.

My guess is that Sid isn't just making it up. It oculd have been a case of Sid asking Mbakwe or someone close to him if he had an official visit to Memphis or was looking at going to Memphis and Mbakwe simply denied it (intending to downplay the significance). Sid may be senile but I don't think he just makes up stuff like this.

Sid never asked Mbakwe, he said friends of Mbakwe told him. It would be interesting to know if these sources even know Trevor more them casually.

"Trevor Mbakwe did well in the classroom, posting a grade-point average better than 3.0." Does anyone know if this part of his story is correct?

good old racist undertones. Notice you never asking if the stories of Blakes good grades were true. You must be a fan of Hannity or Beck.

It might actually be because people seem to be able to disprove the first part of the story, therefore they are questioning if the second part of the story might be false also. Has nothing to do with the person in question, more so with the credability of the report. Make sense?

Don't use long words like "questioning" and "credibility". You'll just confuse him. This is, after all, someone who can't differentiate South and West on a map.
