per Sid:

Tough raising money

The $190 million fundraising campaign to improve the Gophers athletics facilities apparently is going to take time.

If that wasn’t the case, they wouldn’t be making the temporary improvements to the gym and locker rooms at the Bierman Building for the Gophers men’s basketball team, or similar temporary improvements to the football coaches’ offices in the Gibson-Nagurski Football Complex, or some of the other minor facility upgrades currently underway.

Then you also have the $8 million the Gophers are trying to raise for improvements to Mariucci Arena.

The word on the street is that athletic director Norwood Teague has a good chance to get large sums of money from Land O’Lakes, 3M and possibly Cargill. But no one has come up as a major contributor to provide for the big needs of the facilities, improvements that would enable Gophers to compete in recruiting with schools that have an advantage.

Go Gophers!!

...so you stop painting and carpeting and fixing the plumbing while you wait for the new building to completed 2-3 years from now. Yeah, that makes sense. Since Sid is now wrong most of the time, I don't buy any of this.

Okay Sid. So which of your two breaking news on the facilities is correct?

Maybe we can get Maturi to come back and organize a pot luck or something...

Pretty sure I got savaged for not buying into the Norwood Teague "everything is going great" hook, line and sinker. I don't trust Sid but it would be nice to get some legitimate news on progress. It's a state run institution so yes Norwood should be accountable for more than what he's given. He's highly compensated to make progress not spin.

I would think the most informative person would be Lou Nanne. He's chairing the fund raising and would be more open than Teague. Has anyone recently heard him discuss the progress?

Wouldn't Sid lean towards lying to cover up the lack of progress? (At least if anyone at the university was a close personal friend) If that's true, things could be even worse.

Ha! Are some of you rubes for real? You, and JMWZ, sound like Mel Gibson in Conspiracy Theory. ROFL.

Well, at the Craguns Golf Outing Norwood was pretty upbeat, but I didn't hear any names mentioned as mega donor's. You.would think if there was a " name " it would get leaked .

Shoot, I thought you would have some breaking news that would have put Doogie to shame!!! :cool02:

Be patient. It's just a matter a time until Sid reports that things are going swimmingly and we can all feel good again.

Exactly. Teague is starting to sound like a doctor who keeps telling the patient, "don't worry, everything is going to be fine."

I understand that, if fund-raising is not going well, he's not going to come out and admit it, but it would be nice to get at least a little tidbit IF, as he says, things are going well.

1) there won't be any names released unless there is a contract and agreement from the donor.
2) Sid is always "woe is us" on anything related to Goph facilities. If it was up to him we would play football games at Winter park. he was one of the geniuses who got us 30 years in the wilderness of the Metrodome.
3) I don't know if it is going well, but I know there was never any intent to have anything public to say about progress before this fall.
4) I think I agree that coming out and listing a $190 million scope was not great. But they can make a lot of progress for the revenue sports paying the bills for half that amount or less.

Far too logical. No one...NO ONE...is going to be named until the i's are dotted and the t's are crossed. I know that's too much for the "more me now" generation, but that's the way it is. It will get done, whether we fret or not.

An item to consider, which corcoran1 touched on, is people do not write big checks and walk away. The large donors want to be involved with how their money is going to be spent and they will negotiate and sign agreements that specify exactly that. These things take time and hopefully, Teague is already doing this with a number of large donors.

And that's just for the twenty bucks from Sid.

Good points though.

Who would believe anything this guy says anymore...and who is running the Strib? Seriously, its worse than a blog run by 3 teenage girls.

and why exactly do you think you are entitled to that? if in fact, potential large gift donors have asked to remain anonymous at this point. which is how it generally works in 95% of these cases with large donor gifts/development. not trying to sound like too much of a jerk, but some of you seemingly have no idea just how the large donor fundraising and development process works (whether it be sports or something else) in relation to reality and how you personally would like it to work, more like be leaked/communicated to you.

well, some of those doing the most complaining seem to be from what I assume may be your generation or at least in the ballpark of your generational age. i.e. short ornery, etc. just saying.

Oh, we have plenty of narcissists, too. Probably invented it back with the steam engine.

I just get a kick out of the complainers who have likely not donated a dime: "But I buy season tickets and post on Gopherhole!!!" That and a dime will get you, well, a dime.

MN Gophers Football: Practice Facilities Fundraising - Why It's Not Time To Panic

From The Daily Gopher:

“Remember those shining new practice facilities for a bunch of the sports (but most importantly for football and basketball)? Seems like forever ago that we heard about those. What exactly is happening with the fundraising for those things anyway?”

Click on the link below to read GoAUpher’s take on this.

The topic was brought up on the Sports Show last night. Nanne said that there are some issues with Tax implications for those who don't live in MN. For example those business persons who now reside in Florida would be deemed MN residents in they make a large donation to the U of M, and thus MN tax implications. Nanne said there is work being done to loosen that tax law.

This is how I at least understood it.

yes, I too would make the logical jump from

A) Spending minimal $$$ now (vs. the $190m goal) on already planned minor improvements for the current players and staff that are necessary until the new digs are built

to

B) Teague and Nanne are a modern day Callahan Auto sales team trying to sell Ketchup popsicles to donors wearing white golves.

That's how I took it as well.

Agree with you 100% and often agree with most of your takes here on GH. Even if I am from a different generation. Otherwise known as Gen X. ;)

season tickets and subscribing to BTN and ESPN have led to more than $15 Million in annual profits by the football team. We don't mock fellow Twins fans for not donating to Target Field, we hold the pohlads and the administration responsible for spending all the revenue to improve the team.

Big, big difference, my friend. Buying season tickets is 99% getting something out of it. It's like going to a movie. Do you care that after movie theater expenses 10% goes to the theater and 90% goes to the Studio? Hell no, you go to get entertained. Same with sports tickets. Most of those that go don't care where the money goes. They only start to care if the product is lacking. Nobody cared the first couple of years at Target Field, now they do.

Donations to a college stadium or other facilities is voluntary, and you don't necessarily get a tangible reward like you do with going to a game. You will over time, perhaps.

Shocking. I'll tell you a small tale. I had to do taxes in both Minnesota and Arizona this year. 5/12 of my income was Minnesota, 7/12 Arizona. Same withholding, same deductions, same everything in both States. I received a $2,000 refund in Arizona, and had to pay $200 to Minnesota.

Too bad, then that median income is over 10,000 less than MN. Even considering the cost of living differential the median Minnesotan comes out ahead.

AZ has some beautiful areas, to be sure (Sedona, Flagstaff area) but the Phoenix metro is a brown ***hole on the earth subject to choking haboobs, valley fever, and scorching hot and humid air during the summers.

Other than that, great place.

Back to the topic, sorry.
