Sid: Kaler will be more involved in sports than any president I've known

Yes, he wants championship teams. I love it. No settling for bubble teams like some on here are happy to achieve.

"...more involved in sports than any president I've known"

Including Washington?

Just another close personal president.

Sid's 92 birthday tomorrow(Thursday) give him a birthday wish on OT board Sid's Birthday Thread.

Congratulations Sid!...you are older than Lake of the Isles.

Maybe Sid can take over as shadow GM of the Vikings like he was for the Lakers back in the day. Can't be any worse than Rick Spielman ($25MM for John friggin Carlson) even at his age; the Wilf's seem business savvy, but obviously aren't with their Spielman decision and not firing Chilly when he burned a third round draft choice by choosing waivers as the form of discipline for Moss!

Coming from Sid this means very little, he'll say anything to get a scoop. I'll believe it when I see it, The gophers haven't won a share of the B1G football title since '67 and they have three bball titles since '37. (counting th final four team) In terms of the big revenue sports, the U has a culture of losing that dates way back before Maturi, Kill, Tubby etc. Hopfully sir sid is right, but I'm sure he said the samething about Prexy B as Wren likes to call him. Hopfully Kaler comes through

Sid at his "suck up" best. It's why we love the guy.

At Sid's age, he doesn't need to "suck up" to anyone.

Sid: Kaler will be more involved in sports than any president I've known From what I have read and heard, I totally agree with Sid.

Here is an informative artlcle that is worthy of a read to get a bit more of Mr. Kaler's background. http://www.startribune.com/local/107616823.html?page=2&c=y

Stony Brook's AD had this to say about Kaler and sports:

"Fiore said Kaler was skillful at fundraising and changing the culture on campus to one that values athletics, too.

"He's just very passionate about athletics," he said."

As the Seawolves football team lurched to their first big win this year, Stony Brook University Provost Eric Kaler stood on the sidelines, vowing to help the team build national presence.

"That's leadership, and that's courage," Athletic Director Jim Fiore said of Kaler's role in turning a have-not athletic department without school colors into one with six conference championships last year.

There are no sure things but I believe that Mr. Kaler is very well suited to provide the resources and an improved environment around the UM to make the Gopher's competitive. However, changing the losing culture of the past four plus decades will be a monumental task.

Bayfield - thanks for your thoughts. I think the last two U Presidents had good intentions in this regard. President Kaler is someone who has done it before. Are we really getting our Administration at the U were it needs to be to become a succesful program? AD hire will be key but I am very hopeful.
