per Sid:

P.J. Fleck came from a midmajor program when the Gophers hired him away from Western Michigan, but he’s surrounded himself with some amazing talent — not only with his assistant coaches but some impressive external hirings.

The two biggest names are Ed Warinner and Robb Smith.

Warinner will be the offensive line coach and running game coordinator after serving as Ohio State offensive coordinator/tight ends coach in 2016 and the Buckeyes’ offensive line coach from 2012-15.

Smith was the defensive coordinator and secondary coach at Arkansas from 2014-16, and before that he was the linebackers coach for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2013. He’s the defensive coordinator and linebackers coach at Minnesota.

It’s hard to remember two coaches with better pedigrees joining a new staff the way that Smith and Warinner signed up with Fleck.

Go Gophers!!

I'm with Sid here, Ed was the standout name to me. For some reason he doesn't get a lot of mention from others.

It's hard to know, especially without seeing them coach any games so far, but it seems we have our best coaching staff in a long time. Confident on the offensive side and in Paup on defense. Robb Smith, I hope is equal to the departed.

No disrespect to Warinner but the offensive side of the ball was a struggle for the Buckeyes last year. They brought in Kevin Wilson from Indiana to turn it around. Certainly doesnt mean Warinner can't have tremendous success with Gophers.

True but he's no longer an OC so hopefully the Gophs can benefit from him getting back to his roots

Props to Coyle for opening the the purse to get these guys. Just me, but I don't think Maturi would've been pro active in that regard. He and Mason went 15 rounds on pay for ass't coaches.
Mason lost a couple of good ones when Maturi wouldn't pony up.

I remember this well. Dan on KFAN compounded this problem as well to the point of mockery attacking Mason on this asking for donations.

Word from the Ohio St. fasn was that at OL Ed was outstanding but then he got involved in the offense at the time their offense went to ****. Ed was told it was back to just OL work for him and he wanted to move on then. But otherwise they wanted to keep Ed at Ohio St for the OL.

Presumably he is getting involved more here or will or something...

Who knows if it is true but that is the common tOSU fan scuttlebutt out there.
