Sid Hartman: U needs healthy Williams, Coleman

Funny to say but I feel kind of glad to hear that they were hobbled against Michigan, I was wondering what was up with those guys.

Not surprised about Rodney. He did not look like himself the other night vs MI...

Rodney had a nasty fall against Indiana when he slipped on the moisture near center court. He almost did the splits. He came up limping and holding his hip. Someone less athletic (like me) would not have been able to walk after that fall.

Did anyone else notice TM go a little gimpy after a scrum late in the 2nd half last Thurs? It looked like he was trying to walk-off a limp on his right leg and apparently did because he kept playing and didn't appear too hampered.

I could tell Coleman was favoring his shoulder when he was shooting his free throws, was wondering when he hurt it? Rodney's fall made me feel pain when I saw it

Of course they do. The bench is not capable of doing too much. Depth is strictly to blame on Tubs, and although I believe the starting 5 is equal to most of the top 10 teams in the nation, the bench is not close to most of the top 25 benches, and is a weakspot.

Typical Sid Hartman, pointing out the obvious...

At least they aren't playing 48 games in 99 days like the Wild. That is a crazy schedule. Hopefully every nurses up their bumps and bruises. If we take care of business in the first half, we will be able to get the big boys some substantial rest time in the second half against NU. I'd like to be firing on all cylinders against Wisco.

Rodney injured the whole year? talk about lame (pardon the pun) excuses. Looks like Rodney will play the whole season at less than 100% due to bad hip. If players are too injured to play bench them, otherwise let the chips fall where they may and do not make excuses after the game.

Here we go...

Vintage Sid, making excuses for the Gophers. Is Sid privy to injuries of the Gophers' opponents? And would he offer them as an excuse if the Gophers beat them?

Guys are banged up everywhere this time of season. It's not unique to Minnesota. Michigan out-toughed & outplayed the Gophers, plain and simple.

In Rodney's defense, I thought he'd suffered a major injury when he slipped at IU. The fact that he came back into that game implied it wasn't too bad, but I can see that it may have affected him Thursday. The Coleman injury seems to have come out of nowhere.

Coaches are obligated to divulge performance hampering injuries. Lets say Rodney and Joe are both playing hurt and at 80% effectiveness vs Mich. If the injuries are not made public and a person on the inside has a friend in Vegas make a large wager on Mich based on this privy information then you have a ethical and perhaps a legal issue. I did not see any reports of Joe or Rodney looking injured during the game. Not playing well perhaps but not looking like they were gimping around or playing with one arm.

Scary to think injured starting players are better than healthy bench players.

After seeing that happen I immediately thought he shouldn't be coming back in the game (we were also getting destroyed at the time). It looked like a hip flexor injury, a nagging injury I know all too well. Assuming that's what his hip injury is, I would be surprised it if didn't bother him all year.

I disagree. "Giving away games" is usually when you are beating a team by a decent amount the entire game and then you "give it away" near the end. If we had won in the very end of either game, Michigan or Indiana would've given away the game. We were simply outplayed and didn't deserve to win either game, unfortunately.
When you turn the ball over that much, that's exactly what your doing.

I think you can "give away" a game by not performing your best and as a result, not making the other team have to play their best basketball to win.

I think Michigan has more next level talent than we do. Burke, Hardaway, and Robinison will/should all be mid first round picks. Robinson might even make the late lottery. If you are playing a more talented team you have to be the more physical team, getting the lose balls, disrupting flow. Michigan did this better than we did. They won. I imagine both Indiana's and Michigan's coaches said "If you can match Minnesota's intensity, physical play, and defense we will win."

Teams rarely actually perform their best though. Giving away a game is the classic we beat ourselves, we aren't going to give the other team credit for either just being better or playing a better game. Michigan and Indiana are slightly better teams and they played slightly better games against us. Saying we gave away the games takes credit away from them. They didn't play their best games either.

This story reminds me of something the Soviet News Agency put out after their Hockey Team lost in 1980. Sir Sidney is always doing his part to keep the hometown coaches in his good graces.
