While the Gophers athletic department hasn’t had any success in winning football or basketball titles for a long time, it certainly has had good luck in hiring Jerry Kill as football coach and Richard Pitino as men’s basketball coach, as proven by their performances this past season.

A number of successful football coaches turned down the chance to succeed Tim Brewster with the Gophers program, and even though Kill was a ways down Joel Maturi’s original list of possible candidates, he has turned out to be as good as or better than any of the coaches who were approached for the job.

The Gophers program took a step backward in the years after it replaced Glen Mason, who was so well-respected and did a good job coaching. It now appears to be getting back to where it was.

Go Gophers!!

I think Kill is here for the long haul and am very optimistic that he will elevate the program.

I don't buy into Pitino caring about the U for a second. He's just using us as a stepping stone. Hopefully we are more attractive for the next guy after he leaves.

Whether or not either succeeds will depend on what their ACT scores were, clearly.

You are such a radient flower in the winter.

Do you think Pitino Jr sees this as a destination job?

I'm with you on this one. I don't see the U being a destination job for the young Pitino. I'm just hoping he turns it into a desirable job for the next guy.

I'm excited about Kill and Pitino too.

I will be elated when one of them is above .500 in conference play.

I'm against unreal standards. But you have to have some!

Maybe, maybe not. To some extent, if he gets a practice facility and has success here, where would he go that would be a better job? Duke when coach K retires? UNC when Williams retires? I doubt it. The obvious one is Louisville when his dad retires or Florida when Donovan retires or takes an NBA job. But being at a B1G school (one of the better B-Ball conferences), if he's winning, I'm just not sure how many opportunities are truly better and out of those, how many he'd be offered. I don't disagree that Minnesota doesn't mean a lot per se.

If he doesn't get the practice facility then a lot of other places will look better. But he has to WIN first, so I'll worry about it then.

About time Sid sees it this way. He's always such a pessimist when it comes to the gophers.

Two great hires by norwood! They are in the process of bringing great things to the U! I have never been so excited about gopher football. And its nice to see someone with ability on the basketball sidelines!

Kill was a Maturi hire.

Is there a different Glen Mason I'm unaware of?

Has there EVER been a major revenue sport head coach that Sid didn't like when they were at the U?
