With former coach Jerry Kill being forced to retire Oct. 28 because of health complications from his epilepsy, there was no doubt the Gophers football recruiting class was going to be affected. But Tracy Claeys, who was interim coach before receiving a three-year, $4.5 million contract to replace Kill on Nov. 11, believes recruiting is shaping up well with two weeks left before national signing day on Feb. 3.

“It’s going good … I mean things are working out,” Claeys said. “You have a couple kids change their mind here and there, and you have a couple others who don’t take care of some academic things they need to, and with the changes in staff, you’re going to have a few changes here or there, but we feel good about where things are at. For the most part, the kids who want to come to the University of Minnesota hung in there with us, and we just have a little bit of finishing up here these next few weeks. As I’ve said before, this will be our best signing class when we’re all said and done. It will definitely help our football team be much better in the fall.”

The Gophers have two four-star commitments in Eden Prairie linebacker Carter Coughlin and wide receiver Dredrick Snelson out of Fort Lauderdale, Fla. Coughlin, who recently had his Rivals.com rating jump 34 spots to No. 82 overall in the country, has been recruited by most of the major schools and had offers from Iowa, Michigan State, Ohio State, Oregon, Pittsburgh and Wisconsin. Snelson has offers from Alabama, Auburn, Notre Dame, USC and Wisconsin and several other strong programs. There is no doubt Coughlin will sign, but Snelson is a question mark.

Didn't this article get posted already?

Also I didn't see any "paper tiger" talk there.

You either don't know what Paper Tiger means or you have a time machine which is allowing you to see future results.

All I see in that quote is a coach being positive about a recruiting class, something which is being echoed by the recruiting services.

That and what should Tracy say?

"well this is a pretty mediocre class"

If he said that, especially right before signing day, we'd be all over him... and we should, that would be insane.

Yeah there are certain times it may be best to refrain from being completely honest in his position. On that note, he mentioned that so far he had about 90% buy-in from the current team, thought that was interesting he said that.

And the thing is, on "paper" (there's that word again), Claeys may very well be accurate. This could prove to be the best (or at least highest-ranked) signing class under the Kill/Claeys era. I'm at work, so I can't take the time to look it up, but I bet someone here could find how the previous recruiting classes have been ranked nationally and in the B1G.

But, back to the OP - I am still astounded by the number of people who claim to be Gopher Fans, and yet they always take the most pessimistic viewpoint possible on every topic.

My favorite part of GH is when folks don't like what a coach says in an interview or presser when there is only 1 answer he can give. "Hey Tracey- how do you feel about your recruiting class?" WTF do you expect him to say.

I see they are saving the Mitch is displaying confidence and leadership article for April. In April, it's all 'the team will go as far as Mitch can take them' but then in Oct. it's 'well...it's a team game.....'

Tracy: Well guys we're in trouble. The kids we got are pretty shaky. Really I'm just checking my contract for the buyout at this point.... but hey I'm being honest!

Provided he's not going full Brewster, Tracy has to sell the team pretty much all the time. Maybe he lets some hints out here or there... but oh gawd not now.

Yes, that response would make everyone on here feel better. Maybe the kids would still sign and use it as "bulletin board material". We know what an impact that can make. IALTO

At least as much as icing the kicker.

Your constant need to deride and diminish the stature of a 21-22 yo kid is ridiculous. Move on to another board Mr Nelson.

I'm guessing that 10% is predominantly made up of offensive linemen.

If NSD were today, it would be the highest ranked in the B1G and nationally of their tenure. Will be interesting to see where it lands. Snelson and Watts are big swing guys. And who really knows what guys the teams right around them in the rankings are close to getting.

Usually when a new coordinator comes in, he has a few recruits he'll bring with him. So far I haven't seen one from our new OC. Does that seem odd to anyone else?

Not odd. He came from ULL. We did just offer a QB/ATH he was working to get there as well. Might be the only one worthy?

Ya, that makes sense. I guess what worries me more is the hiring of an OC from the bottom barrel conference in Div I football.

There are far worse conferences in Division I football than the Sun Belt.

Agree that it is funny to see how people overreact to every single comment. As you say there is no other possible answer Claeys could give to his current opinion of the recruiting class. He can't talk about specific players until they sign and he would be an idiot to say anything other than this is a great class in his opinion.

True. But to my original point, is a coordinator from the sun belt a reason to be concerned? I'm not saying his resume is bad, just wondering if we could have swung for the fences a bit more? I could be totally wrong though. He did set a lot of school records for offense, so maybe he was a star on the rise, that we we're lucky to snag before someone else did. I'm hoping it's the latter.

Nah. Schools with much better programs than ours hire coaches from worse conferences than the Sun Belt all the time. Oregon hired Chip Kelly as OC from New Hampshire. Ohio State hired Jim Tressel from Youngstown State. We're pretty unlikely to pull sitting OCs from other Power 5 schools.

Great points. I do like reading that he broke records at ULL.

Well I think the chances of snagging an OC from another power 5 conference team was not very likely. This is essentially the next step down from that. And you want to find coaches that fit what you want to do too. He maybe talked to coaches from the Mountain West or American, but if they aren't on the same page as Claeys, it wouldn't make sense to hire them.
