"Gordy Shaw, the former Gophers offensive line coach under Glen Mason and one of the best recruiters who has ever worked at the university, is a finalist for the St. Olaf coaching job. If the Oles hire him, he would do one great job for them."

Go Gophers!!

I was curious about the St Olaf opening. I suspected that they might try to lure back Chris Meidt if he was available.

Meidt had a good six year run going 40-20 at St. Olaf before he left to join Jim Zorn's staff with the Washington Redskins.

Gordy Shaw is a fantastic coach and a GREAT recruiter! I wish the best for him. It's too bad he's not still at the U. However, it would be awesome to have him back in MN and good for MIAC football. We need good coaches and recruiters here to keep our D3 talent from heading elsewhere. (i.e. Sconny and the WIAC)

The only former coach to be banned from the Gopherhole. Post-Mason/Early Brewster was about as weird as this board has ever been.

Good luck to Gordy. I was lucky enough to meet the legend of Northfield. He still holds the rushing record. And those who regale his exploits will tell of the game where he broke an 80 yard run for touchdown that was called back. On the next play he went 95 for the TD. And playing for The Ole's he was none other than Ole Gunderson. They went 9-0 in 1970. He is the legend of Northfield.

And Ole Gunderson is the father of former Gopher baseball player Shane Gunderson. Yes, I grew up not too far from Northfield in the 1960s and Ole was/is a legend.

I have nothing against Shaw, but I've never figured out how the greatest offensive line coach in the history of NCAA football wasn't in higher demand after he left Minnesota.

I met Gordy at a golf outing several years ago. I know he burned some bridges when he stayed on until Brewster was hired, but the the guy could flat out coach and recruit. If I remember right he had a child that was under constant care. Quite frankly I wish he were on Kill's staff as OL coach.
Even if he had the same injuries the OL would've been better. Remember, he had Eslinger and Setterstrom starting as freshman.

I am sure that this opinion will get you onto his staff if he gets the job.

That isnt what burned his bridges. It was going public and ripping Brewster when he got let go and openly cheering against the Gophers in a suite at the Dome (at least that is what the rumors were).

"Burned some bridges"? You think? He didn't just "burned some bridges", he torched them, blew-up them up and then dynamited the roads leading to them. All the while drinking way beyond excess. It would be amazing if any school that had other options taking a chance on the guy.

A quick look at his career since he left here confirms that:

"Quite frankly" I wish he had acted a little more like an adult rather than an alcoholic on a 12 day bend.

Browning was the real mastermind behind the offensive line.

And Mitch Browning is the TE/RB coach at Ashland College in Ohio. There's a lot that goes into hiring decisions, but Shaw and Browning were both hailed when they worked for Mason and haven't had much luck landing a decent job since leaving Minnesota. I'm not pounding these guys, but what the heck?

Shaw post Gophers has been a WAC level Oline coach at Hawaii and Idaho (his present position) and and an FCS O Coordinator at FCS South Dakota. He hasn't exactly been a bust but he has taken a step backwards.

SO he partied a little hard. Big deal. I'm trying to find the time right now to go on a 12 day bender myself. lol

Ok, I apologize. I didn't realize how badly Gordy messed up. My opinions = changed.

unless there were back-to-back penalties, he would have gone 90, not 95..

I'm sure you've considered the possibility of a personal foul, brain wizard that you are.

How badly did he mess up? Where can I learn more?

Personal foul from the 20 only would have placed that ball on the 10. Unless rules were different in his day.

Yes, it was bad, I heard he at six Dome Dogs, drank 15 24 ounce Dome Coronas beer cans, and in a Babe Ruth Moment crapped his U of M issued coaching khakis (that he had failed to properly return to Joel Maturdi) during the fourth quarter of the NDSU loss, right in front of joel maturdi, and Tim Brewster's wife. There may have been some dark mauve splatter.

I also heard that after that he was banned from Wayzata for life due to these grave moral failings, even Glen Mason Bill Cooper and the Minnetonka CC mafia could not help him. He should have worn the Depends diaper. Despite all of this, and a violation of the passive aggressvie "minnesoooota nice social code, Hawaii and Idaho hired him, what a shocker!

Not much of a shock. He fogged a mirror. That made him hirable at both those schools.

He recruited me out of high school, most genuine guy that was on the coaching staff with Mason. Hope he gets it.
