Bad Hoosiers history

Despite the fact that Indiana has been a noncompetitive football team over the years, the Hoosiers have been able to beat the Gophers at home in recent years. The Gophers are 6-17-2 in Bloomington and only 2-16 in their past 18 visits there dating to 1969.

Their toughest loss to the Hoosiers came in 2000 when they had started the year 5-2 and just defeated No. 6 Ohio State on the road, ending a 16-game losing streak to the Buckeyes. The Gophers were ranked No. 22 in the nation. Indiana was 2-4 on the season and had just lost 58-0 at Michigan. But the Gophers lost that game 51-43 and finished the season at 6-6 after such a promising start.

Then in 2004 the Gophers were once again 6-2 going to play at Indiana and ranked No. 24. The week before, they had defeated Illinois 45-0. Indiana was 2-5 at the time and had just lost 30-7 to Ohio State, its fifth loss in a row. The Hoosiers would defeat the Gophers 30-21 and Minnesota would lose its final three Big Ten games.

This year’s Hoosiers are 3-4 and coming off a bye, but they were giving up tons of points before then. They lost to Michigan 63-47 two weeks ago and Michigan State 42-28 Oct. 12. Still the Hoosiers did beat Penn State at home 44-24 and are averaging 42.4 points per game.

Go Gophers!!

These were typical Mason responses and collapses. I don't see a relationship to the current team or coaches. It's the dawn of a new era at Minnesota. The sleeping giant is waking....

We had a pretty terrible history against Nebraska as well. You all may have picked up on that last week. You had to look hard.

I think I will cry if we win the next two games and earn a ranking.

None of these players have played in Bloomington. None of the coaches have any history coaching there. End of story. Road game versus a very vulnerable opponent. Get it done.

Ha ha - ow...the truth hurts. Indiana has hurt us a bunch. It's a trend. Hopefully the current team can break the trend.

That 2004 game still haunts me. I'm glad the forecast calls for minimal winds.

Glad you said this. I agree, but would have included atlest to missspelings.

So...based on these numbers, it would seem that a win @ IU would be considered a signature win :)

That started my huge distrust of kickers.

Correction: I was thinking about 1998 and Adam Bailey missing almost everything.

2004 was bad as well.

Howling winds that day. Not quite soul crushing as Studwell55 describes that loss but definitely not an enjoyable 14 hour ride home.

FYI Kill and his staff have already won in Bloomington, back with SIU, I believe in 2005? This staff will be prepared, we could still lose, but there isn't some magical hex in play against the Hoosiers.

I'm foggier than usual on this one, but I remember in 1999 that Adam Bailey missed two extra points in a 20-19 Gopher loss in Bloomington and I think he missed a chip shot FG or two as well. Sure on the XPs. Not so sure on the FGs. I just remember it was a very disappointing loss.

Technically, it was "computer crushing" since I had to follow it on Gamecast and, well, figure the rest of the story out for yourself.

In Bailey's defense that Indiana field was borderline unplayable in 1998

That started my huge distrust of kickers.

I have seen some ripped up fields and cow pastures in my day as a fan and I still cannot remember a turf
that looked like it was all in clumps and an absolute cow pasture of a field in 1999.
Yes Gophers should have won the game but the kicker Bailey was having trouble with his footing all game even in the pregame warmups I remeber him falling on his arse.
If anything the coaches should have figured out if there was a way to get bigger cleats on his shoes.
We lost the game as much because of field conditions as anything Indiana did.
