per Sid:

Big Ten Commissioner Kevin Warren took over for Jim Delany on Jan. 2 of this year and since then has dealt with situations that no commissioner has ever dealt with. But through it all — from the postponement of Big Ten fall sports in August to the announcement this week that the league would start its football season in late October — Warren has stayed thoughtful and patient.

“There is no playbook of leading an athletic conference during a global pandemic,” Warren said. “We’re facing uncertain and unprecedented times, and the health, safety and wellness of our student-athletes, our coaches, our game officials, administrators, fans and families and everyone else associated with our sports programs and on our campuses remains our No. 1 priority. I have just had to remain just kind of disciplined and organized and very methodical and follow the advice and counsel of our medical experts.”

While Warren has focused on health first, he has faced a lot of unjust criticism. But he said he would not trade this year for anything.

“I think this year just has been complicated. I mean, you think about it. Not only from a health standpoint, we have financial issues that we’re dealing with, global pandemic, but then also all of the social unrest in an election year,” Warren said. “But because I always look for the positive energy associated with it, I always ask myself, even though it has been some painful days this year, I ask myself, when I look back to when I started on January 2, are we better as a conference? Am I better as a leader? The answer is yes. It’s painful, but it’s really that sometimes pain and challenges provide you with an opportunity to get stronger and create greatness.”

Go Gophers!!

Clearly many fans have not been thoughtful and patient throughout the process.

This thread is going to be a dumpster fire.

Warren deserves some slack for taking over in what is an unprecedented year. Still to play or not play football was handled as poorly as it could be.

Warren is the mouthpiece for 28 people (presidents and ADs) who don’t agree on what to do. Of course his message seems muddled.

Warren deserves a raise, after what he has had to deal with.

I'm Shocked - Shocked that Sid Hartman would write a column (or tell his assistant what to write) that puts the best possible spin on Kevin Warren's actions.

Sid is loyal to his friends, and Warren certainly counts as a "close personal friend" due to his time with the Vikings.

This is Sid trying to help out a friend who is going through a tough time.

Shoot, the guy is 100 years old. He has earned the right to write anything he wants.

Personally, I think Warren has made a lot of mistakes, but the B1G Presidents' Council deserves as much if not more of the blame.

I think he deserves some slack for being thrown into a tough situation so soon after taking over.

He doesn't deserve any slack for not leading and lying in the few statements he made. He should have been more vocal about the decisions and he shouldn't have said that they decision to postpone wouldn't be revisited when it was revisited less than a month later.

No one expected perfection but honesty and leadership are always expected from leaders.

Dude went into a bunker when there was a never ending stream of negative publicity. Even if you give him the benefit of the doubt that he had no hand in the decision, his job is to convey information, and handle PR to make the conference look good. He did none of that. Instead he chose to hide out and hope it would all blow over. It didn’t.

I do find it amusing people want to “cut him slack”. He is the head of an organization that had $759 million in revenue in 2018, and I’m assuming is paid quite well to do it. Criticism comes with the job.

No shit, what a nightmare. Just getting his feet wet and he has to deal with this. I will definitely cut him some slack.

Imagine you were him, he didn't have the final say, he was in a no win situation. Nothing bad happened by him laying low, I don't fault him for that.

Yep. Just horrible leadership and should be canned but he won't be. Maybe he'll learn and improve.

I would like to see the typical dumbass here step into that job and deal with this in less than six months. Its just pathetic losers who bitch when everything doesn't go how they want.

Thankfully Trump and Clay Travis stepped up and helped move things along or we'd still be watching everyone else, wondering why the B1G isn't playing. How lucky are we to have such great leadership!

LOL! Old bone spurs was yapping away at the same time everything else was going on behind the scenes. We don't know everything Warren did behind the scenes and was pushing to take place. Quite often a good leader is quiet getting things done as opposed to shooting off the mouth calling people names that hinders progress.

He's been awful so far. Let's hope for the best going forward. Let's end this thread.

Wow. Need to cut back on the booze or increase the valium. Warren is a joke.

I think Warren stubbled a bit out of the gate but he certainly has the credentials for the job. Once B1G sports get rolling again we'll all be saying "Warren Who?"

I can't believe this sports organization found dealing with a new virus difficult!

I’ve been saying it since day one, Warren is a complete clown and should resign out of respect for the B1G.

he has made many blunders that just shouldn’t have happened. He overplayed his hand in trying to cancel the season, and when other conferences clowned him, he folded and hide like Mpls gopher does in his basement.

communication, the guy can not answer or give a truthful comment on the situation and or explain the reason why he chose the route. As the leader of all presidents and ADs, he has major sway in bringing everyone in together.

you can tell with so much disparity the whole process was a complete cluster duck. That falls on Warren and his inability to lead.

theres other major issues with him also.

Hyperbole aside, and while acknowledging that it hasn't been a stellar few months for Warren, let's not make ridiculous statements like calling him "the leader of all presidents." University presidents are many rungs up from the conference athletics commissioner.
