It's impossible to design a coverage that can pin down Minnesota punter Peter Mortell's identity.

The redshirt senior fits plenty of descriptors: punter, field goal holder, social media maven, philanthropist, and self-proclaimed Heisman Trophy candidate. Not to mention, he's might be the most well liked football player at Minnesota. Who says punters can't be popular too?

No. 37 shirts (coincidentally Mortell's number) are available online for purchase at the University of Minnesota bookstore. The only other numbered shirt available has former Gophers wide receiver Eric Decker's name on the back. At games, a giant cutout of Mortell's head roams the student section of TCF Bank Stadium.

Beyond campus, Mortell has made a name for himself with his lighthearted Twitter account, which was named the best follow in college football over the summer by NFL.com. Last year, Mortell, along with former Minnesota special teamers Christian Eldred, Jared Hartman and Dave Ramlet, also started an account for the whole group of Minnesota specialists.

On his own account, Mortell constantly sends 140-character wisecracks to over 5,600 followers, including this declaration April 24:

"Officially announcing my candidacy for the 2015 Heisman Trophy. Seeking to become 1st FG Holder to accomplish such feat."

Go Gophers!!

Fun guy, although that article feels like it is sort of explaining the joke at times making it less funny.

Hopefully you all read the story but I feel like this bit needs to be highlighted for those that don't get around to it:

Rather than spending all of his free time crafting Twitter jokes, Mortell likes to get out and help people. Last Christmas, he asked to receive the $452 Best Buy gift card all Minnesota players received for playing in the Citrus Bowl early, and used it to buy presents for children at St. Joseph's Home for Children in Minneapolis.

How many 21-22 year old kids, let alone college athletes, would do something like that? I was already a huge fan of this kid but that moved the needle even more for me. Kickers and punters at the NFL level are hard to predict but hopefully Mortell lands in a great situation next year and is able to kick in the NFL for a long long time. Imagine what he might do if he was in a position where he was making lots of money.

I agree. Underwhelming article. I know the author's still a student, but kind of a swing-and-miss.

Hey one time he followed me on twitter for a whole minute.

After the Nebraska game in 2013 I met him on the field and talked with him for a minute. He is a great guy and has a great personality.
