SI: New coach Hoke can seemingly do no wrong as Michigan's man

I'm happy with Kill, but everything I've ever read and heard about Hoke makes me realize why Maturi had the secret dinner with him. I don't know if he's the best hire of the past off-season or not, but I think Michigan is going to be a much better team shortly.

I second that. The proof in the pudding occurs when these coaches actually have to, um, coach games. Every school with a 1st-year coach has the "greatest hire" until proven otherwise. Kill, Hoke, the Indiana guy (don't know his name), Muschamp. ... they're all fantastic coaches the summer before they've actually coached a game! Wasn't Charlie Weis the next genius a few years ago?

Plus, I love how the article completely ignores the fact that any coach at Michigan would be doing great recruiting in Ohio given the shape Ohio St. is in right now. Mandel makes it seem like Hoke's magical recruiting is what's causing it.

Also, it's not difficult to hire great coordinators when you're given a coaching staff budget that's the highest in the country outside of the SEC.

I dunno...for me, this all says he's a great fit at Michigan b/c he's a Michigan guy. I don't see him doing any better or worse than Kill here at MN to this point. And I'm still more sold on Kill's track record compared to Hoke's.

That said, I was really against Hoke getting hired so I'm sure that's coloring my opinions. He just didn't feel like the right fit for the U.

His recruiting class so far this year is absolutely phenomenal. Actually unreal. Absolutely every recruit is rated more highly than our entire class of 16 so far. I do not count he who shall not be named who now has his sights set on Ohio State.

No doubt. He's also a Michigan Man who has dreamed of this opportunity. It's not too surprising that he's selling the heck out of the superior history, facilities, etc.

I know it's early, etc. etc.

But they are currently ranked (by Rivals) at #21

Previous year's Rivals rankings for Michigan:
2010 #20
2009 #8
2008 #10
2007 #12
2006 #13
2005 #6
2004 #5
2003 #17
2002 #16

Hoke needs to prove that he can coach at this level (sound familiar). RichRod didn't figure it out with outstanding classes, and I'll need to see Hoke prove it before I start bowing down to him (not that I ever would).

Fair enough, but you are incorrect about the current ranking of the class Hoke has put together. That is for last years (sub par for Michigan) class. I would gather that so far they are ranked much higher than 21 with their current recruiting class. Hoke served as an assistant for some very successful years while at Michigan and will be going back to the programs bread and butter rather than trying to flip a 360 like Rich Rod did which was a complete failure. I have more faith than many other new coaches when it comes to Hoke. It seems like a very well timed fit for Michigan and it's program.

I also love how passionate he is about his hatred for Ohio State. This really cracked me up: "Hoke refuses to refer to Ohio State by name, calling it "that school in Ohio" or simply "Ohio". Though each of the two schools Hoke previously coached at used red as a team color, Hoke wore black or white polo shirts on game days because red reminded him of Ohio State."

Hoke couldn't have walked into a better situation.

The expectations are about as low as possible for Michigan (because of RichRod's tenure), tOSU is going through a bunch of stuff, and he is seen as the proverbial "Michigan man".

I have no idea how good of a coach he is going to be, and i'm not going to take anything away from him if he has success....but things couldn't have worked out much better for Hoke.

You are correct...that is Class of 2011. I confused it because that is the most recent class listed. I'm sure that's because they have not rated the 2012 class yet.

I don't think that RichRod forgot how to coach after all those successfull years at West Virginia, and he'll get a chance to prove that after Michigan pays him off. With all the top 20 and even top 10 recruiting classes Michigan has no excuses for their dismal performances over the last ten years and they should be a favorite in the Big Ten West in 2011. Simply saying RichRod was not a good fit does not explain what happened with the defense in 2011 where they are still very fast and talented. What I am suggesting is there may be some institutional problems that neither Carr nor RichRod could deal with and who knows about the inexperienced and unproven (at this level) Hoke. Everyone has a happy face at this time of year.

I don't disagree at a level. I'm not trying to dredge up the ghost of Mason again, but he was dreaming of the OSU job while coaching here and I'd hate to go through that again with Hoke. It's just that everything I've read and heard about Hoke last season was extremely positive and a lot of commentators had him as "coach most likely" to make a big move up to a next job. We'll see if those commentators are correct.

And I want to make it clear that I think Kill is going to do a solid job here.

+1, I think he will be great ay Michigan, or should be,he has no reason not to be great there, but I'll take Kill for this job. When you can get twenty four star players because you coach a helmet school, recruiting is not that hard. As far as I am concerned, the real complete coaches are the guys who can take programs who can't just load up on four star players, yet still give the Helmet schools all they can handle. I hate to say it, but for the moment that would be Iowa, Wisconsin, Missouri, Okie State (although being just across the border from Texas tant and having T. Boone spend $300 million on your team helps a lot), and maybe even Northwestern.
