This game should have been a blow out. We were fortunate to only lose by point. Northwestern coughing up the ball helped keep us in the game. Coach Fitz finds a way to win even though his team tries to give it away. Coach Fitz is a lot better than any coach we've had in a long time. This guy will lead Northwestern to a Big Ten title this year.

This, unfortunately, is true. Northwestern played an atrocious first half. Penalties, fumbles, dropped passes. The Gophers were lucky to be close in this one. The bad thing is, with the exception of the play calling, I kind of felt the Gophers played as well as they can. The offense was alright, the defense was what they are: BAD.

I also have now totally lost faith in the notion that the team is more athletic and talented. At least on defense. We were getting outrun and outmuscled all over the field. I came away thinking the defense looked small and slow. Hardly the athletic improvement we've been hearing about.

Yes, our defense actually generated some turnovers today, and that's a great sign and would be a great step forward if they could continue creating turnovers while being handicapped by the near total absence of a pass rush.

And if Northwestern is to win the Big 10, they're going to have to play a whole heck of a lot better than this. They're 5-0 but have proven nothing, having played nothing but poor teams. They've beaten Vanderbilt, Illinois State, Rice, Central Michigan, and us, and they *barely* got by Vandy, CMU, and us. They are a powerhouse team by no stretch of the imagination, and unless they get much, much better, they will be exposed when they start playing some of the heavy-hitters in the Big 10.

Seany,

Northwestern is not a heavy hitter but their schedule works out perfectly for them. They don't have to play OSU or Michigan. They get Iowa and Michigan State at home. They play PSU and Wisconsin on the road. PSU is not a heavy hitter this year. I knew going into the year they were overated. They will not even be close to the top 25 when it's all said and done. Wisconsin will be a tough one but the Cats beat them last year and Iowa too.
