At least give Shortell more chances. Let him make the mistakes, at least he knows how to throw the football and has a chance of being a QB. I'd bet if you ask the players on both sides of the ball they would choose Shortell as there guy. At least he doesn't miss receivers by 10 to 15 yards. HE NEEDS TO GET MORE PLAYING TIME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Coach Kill, please end your love affair with Gray! Treat him like you treat the rest of your players! Take the kid gloves off and let's go!!!

Did you watch the game? He already has taken the kid gloves off... Gray got benched tonight-a couple of times. Anytime he isn't out there as the starter is like being benched. Watch the game!

I disagree... put the gloves back on, those of a Wide Receiver's gloves, back on Gray and put him there for the season. Shortell at QB to finish.

Shortell had 0 pass attempts in the only game the Gophers won.

Of course that would be a complex cause fallacy.

Gray vs Shortell

Gray is tall, has good hands and can play as a receiver. However, it's not a natural position for him--he does not move like a receiver, run routes like a receiver and have the quickness necessary to be a top receiver. You either see it or you don't. As a quarterback he has similar limitations. I don't think he'll ever be a top qb ( good enough to run a good big 10 team)--but he can play and I hope he plays as a backup, change of pace qb to Max Shortell. Shortell has quarterback written all over him--his throwing motion, decision skills, accuracy already surpass Gray. I've been, like many others here, a big Gray supporter for the last 2 years, but as a v good football athelete he is a bit of a "tweener" with a body type and skills that don't quite fit any one position.

Good post. This staff has such a tough job right now. They have basically two true freshmen at QB and each player has a completely different skill set. Each brings pluses and minuses to the field. How many coaching staffs are trying to compete with true freshmen QB's?

They were able to run it when he was in because they respected the pass.

Shortell is a QB...he sees the field way better than Gray. Gray is a freak athlete an needs to be in there, just not at QB.

Code:
PLAYER CMP ATT CMP YDS TD INT
M. Gray 39 77 50.6% 521 3 2
M. Shortell 13 29 44.8% 196 2 2
And one of Gray's INTs was of course on an ill conceived hail mary.

Imagine if Brewster had given 1/4 snaps in the previous seasons to Gray. When you're a bottom of the B1G team it makes sense to see what the back-up can do...this is something Kill has figured out that Brewster didn't. If Gray continues to throw ineffectively I could see Kill moving Gray to receiver while still spelling Shortell on select plays.

Thankfully QB play isn't always found in the numbers, Gray was killing drives (outside of the 1st) last night.

Have to agree. The problem with Gray's poor and indecisive passing is we basically surrender a down every series. As long as we don't get to 3rd and more then 3 we can hang. Beyond that the drive is basically done.

I really think that the QB situation will be solved next year when a QB that fits Coach Kills system is on the team. There are two very good Minnesota high school seniors who have committed and hopefully will solve the situation next year.
