"Former Hastings and Gophers star tight end Ben Utecht, forced for forgo his NFL career with the Indianapolis Colts and Cincinnati Bengals after a fifth concussion, is headed for the big time in the music business.

Utecht, 30, who used to sing the national anthem at Gophers basketball games, has teamed with New York piano sensation Jim Brickman for a 40-show national holiday tour that will include Minneapolis' Orchestra Hall on Dec. 14. Utecht, who is moving from Nashville, Tenn., to Lakeville, recently finished recording his first Christmas album.

The University of Minnesota has hired former Gophers quarterback Tony Mortenson from Hutchinson, after a two-year internship working in Gophers athletics, to oversee events at TCF Bank Stadium.

Meanwhile, ex-Gophers linebacker Steve Moore has accepted an intern position working in facilities at Mariucci and Ridder arenas.

Dan Powers, 75, the former Gophers football assistant under Murray Warmath and Joe Salem and the former head coach at Lakewood Community College, resides in West Valley, Ariz., but is in town to compete in a triathlon and to visit friends.

Former Gophers wideout Ernie Wheelright started for the Saskatchewan Roughriders in their home opener the other day but suffered a knee injury and is out indefinitely."
