Charley Walters: U president feeling 'pretty low' after football loss

BY CHARLEY WALTERS
Among those disappointed by the University of Minnesota's stunning 41-38 loss to South Dakota in the TCF Bank Stadium opener Saturday was Minnesota President Bob Bruininks.
"I don't feel very good; I feel pretty low about this game, and I think everybody else does," Bruininks said. "I would regard this as a setback, but I don't think it's a long-term setback. We need to make it a temporary one. We've got to put this behind us and get ready for next week."
Next Saturday, Southern California comes to TCF Bank Stadium to play the Gophers.
"If we upset Southern California, people will quickly forget this game," Bruininks said. "That's a tall order, but I think we can do it."
Bruininks said Saturday "was a great day for football and a great football game, but a very disappointing result for the Minnesota Gophers. I'm deeply disappointed we didn't win this game, and I know everyone in the university community was hoping for a decisive victory that would present a more optimistic foundation for our season."
Bruininks gave credit to South Dakota.
"I have to hand it to the University of South Dakota — they came here to play, they were prepared to play, they had a great game plan and they achieved a really good result," he said. "But it was a really disappointing performance on the part of the Minnesota Gophers, from my point of view."
Bruininks' outlook for the Gophers' football program?
"I'm still very optimistic about the long-range outlook of the football program and our entire athletics program," he said. "We've got a great foundation with the stadium, and I think we have a much stronger financial base for Gophers athletics with the Big Ten Network. I think we've hired good people, and I think we're on the right track.
