Charley Walters: U president feeling 'pretty low' after football loss

BY CHARLEY WALTERS

Among those disappointed by the University of Minnesota's stunning 41-38 loss to South Dakota in the TCF Bank Stadium opener Saturday was Minnesota President Bob Bruininks.

"I don't feel very good; I feel pretty low about this game, and I think everybody else does," Bruininks said. "I would regard this as a setback, but I don't think it's a long-term setback. We need to make it a temporary one. We've got to put this behind us and get ready for next week."

Next Saturday, Southern California comes to TCF Bank Stadium to play the Gophers.

"If we upset Southern California, people will quickly forget this game," Bruininks said. "That's a tall order, but I think we can do it."

Bruininks said Saturday "was a great day for football and a great football game, but a very disappointing result for the Minnesota Gophers. I'm deeply disappointed we didn't win this game, and I know everyone in the university community was hoping for a decisive victory that would present a more optimistic foundation for our season."

Bruininks gave credit to South Dakota.

"I have to hand it to the University of South Dakota — they came here to play, they were prepared to play, they had a great game plan and they achieved a really good result," he said. "But it was a really disappointing performance on the part of the Minnesota Gophers, from my point of view."

Bruininks' outlook for the Gophers' football program?

"I'm still very optimistic about the long-range outlook of the football program and our entire athletics program," he said. "We've got a great foundation with the stadium, and I think we have a much stronger financial base for Gophers athletics with the Big Ten Network. I think we've hired good people, and I think we're on the right track.

Go Gophers!!

Read: Brewster is here for the rest of the season regardless of what happens. Period. End of story.

hopefully this guy reads emails like Maturi, I pleaded for him to can Maturi and bring in someone capable of hiring a football coach.

Seems everybody at the U has their heads in the clouds regarding the current state of things with the football program.

"Beating Southern Cal is a tall order but I think we can do it" - Pres. Bruininks.

"Defense played well, but the offense is a concern"
"We played poorly at times, but we were entertaining." - Maturi in a posted email

Boy, a lot of fantasy life going on with the U's top folks after this game. It's no wonder the program is in as bad of shape as it is.

"We played poorly at times, but we were entertaining." - Maturi in a posted email

Maturi actually said this? There was nothing about the game today that was entertaining. The weather was great and I love the stadium; however it's agonizing watching your team get run all over the field by an inferior opponent.

Bad sign

Whether this was President Bruininks submitting a press release or talking to a sports columnist following a game, it seems weird. (If he's done it in the past, I certainly haven't noticed.) Yeah, probably reading between the lines it means we're going to ride this season out and no one is getting fired mid-season. (For the record, I never thought that was a possibility anyway.) But I also see between the lines that the Pres is putting Coach Brewster on notice. Win next week, period. Or, you'll have an uphill climb (my opinion 4 or more Big Ten wins) to keep your job going into 2011.

Again, just seemed odd that Bruininks was saying anything anyway. A strong statement, in my opinion.

Somebody posted it in the thread about emailing Maturi. I had the same response you did and I obviously can't be completely sure if it's true or not since I'm not the one that sent the original email to Maturi. But supposedly, this was his response to one of the emailers. Which, if true, tells me two things: 1. Maturi is completely out of touch with reality and, 2. He's completely out of his league when it comes to evaluating football teams.

I just don't see how beating USC makes people forget about this game. This is 3 straight really bad performaces against teams from a lower division from the Dakotas.

If the Gophers are able to beat USC on Saturday, I'd enjoy it, but it certainly would not change my opinion that Brewster needs to go.

No, someone "bumped" a thread from last year and a bunch of people were reading it like it was a new one. This comment was in response to the Gopher's overall season from last year.

Thanks, bro. That context makes a lot more sense.

I'm sorry but there is no way in hell that the Gophers will beat USC next weekend. The way we beat USC is if their plane crashes PERIOD.
For everyone that says give him another year, what has he done to show that the program is improving? Please resign.

We have a "great foundation" with the stadium, but there may not be any people watching the games there unless we start to win soon. Especially with the other sports options in town.

one wonders

was Bruininks one of those booing at halftime? I hope so. He must have smuggled in a flask.

The captain of the Titanic didn't think sideswiping an iceberg was a big deal, either. Right up until the point that the bow went under. I think its fair to say that the decks are awash on the S.S. Gopher. The question is when they're going to abandon ship, or are we just going to keep rearranging the deck chairs?

That would be an excellent question for Schnoodler who coincidentally or not has gone silent since the game this afternoon. I would love to hear his response outlining again how the fans just don't get it but he does.

Okay, that makes more sense. My apologies for the post.

Go Gophers!!

I remember a team http://purdue.rivals.com/schedule.asp?Team=PURDUE&year=2009 losing to NORTHERN ILLINOIS at HOME then later beating OHO ST and MICHIGAN in the same year.

Exactly. Why would anyone mention - even hypothetically - the idea of this joke of a program beating USC?

That same Purdue team that has a coach who has proven during his career that he is capable of coaching?? Compared to our used car saleman.

Plus that N Ill. team would have crushed this USD team, that same N Ill team went into Camp Randall last year and took the Badgers down to the wire. Terrible comparison.

Compared to our used car saleman.

Were you aware that Brewster was a used car salesman for while before he started coaching college ball?

This loss reminds me a lot of the Illinois game from last year. We fell behind early and never were able to catch up. It seems like Brewster cannot prepare the team to play week in and week out. If this loss were an isolated occurrence I wouldn't question Brewster's coaching acumen, but I think now we have enough evidence to conclude Brewster can't coach worth a damn. Jim Wacker was a nice guy too, but he had to go. Brewster didn't walk into an ideal situation, but his capriciousness cost him whatever chance he may have had at success.

Danny Hope was not proven at all. 5 decent years at Eastern Ky Univ. He may succeed eventually at Purdue.

USC will take hte opportunity to rest all their starters and theyll still roll us by 20

Offensive Coordinator at Louisville

Head coach as E. Kentucky where in his fifth and final year led his team to an 8-0 conf mark.

Hand picked my Joe Tiller to replace him.

But you're right, "not proven at all". How would you compare his experience to say someone with 'TE Coach' and 'Recruiting Coord.' on his resume???

The 5 years as HC (even at lower level) helped. I wouldn't consider Louisville's offense successful.

FOT, why are you on the football board?? Is it because everyone on the b-ball board is sick of you? If you are here because you are a long time friend of Tubby surely you have no interest in Gopher football...

SOme say

The captain of the Titanic didn't think sideswiping an iceberg was a big deal, either. Right up until the point that the bow went under. I think its fair to say that the decks are awash on the S.S. Gopher. The question is when they're going to abandon ship, or are we just going to keep rearranging the deck chairs?

It would not have been a big deal - - IF he had turned hard into the the ice berg after the first strike. The theory is that it would have kept the ship from sinking as quickly keeping more people out of the water for a longer period of time.

While there have been some connective strings - The Gophers need to get a "captain" that is smart enough to avoid icebergs entirely.

Defer the first ? but no to 2nd ? U asked.

I had similar angst about Purdue football (Danny Hope) this time last year but was proven wrong by his results later in the season.
