(I think) he may have "borrowed" this from Marcus:

... Look for 6-3 high-flying guard Gerald "Chip" Armelin of Sulphur, La., to be the top freshman performer among Tubby Smith's new Gophers basketball recruits ...

Since the other thread on this topic was locked ...

I think Gopher fans should be at least slightly optimistic about Armelin. If reporters are saying he's looking good (even just in reference to the other freshmen), it can't be a bad thing. If the reports are accurate, with Tubby's substitution patterns Armelin will get his chances - you can always use another athletic guard who can play. I will be interested in seeing him given he did not participate in the Canada trip - it's hard to know what to expect.

Does anyone know if Armelin can play the point at all. Most reports have indicated Chip is an athletic 2. It would be nice if he he had the ability to back-up at both guard positions this year so the Gophers have some PG experience going into next year. Even if Tubby is able to land Tharpe, the Gophers will have limited experience there unless Devoe takes that role full time next year.

From reading previous posts, Gopher fans will be pleasantly surprised in Chip. Counting AAU tournments, Summer league games, College Team Camps, and H. S. games, I have witnessed about 400 games that Chip has played in the last 5 years. Without a doubt, hands down, he was the best player on the court about 90 % of the time. He is as good or better than the "so called" three star players I have seen and recognize on the scouting services.

Sounds good. Since you know a bit more about him than most of us do - do you have any details on why he decided on basketball rather than football? To our gain obviously, but I'm curious.

Chip was constantly asked to play football by the coaches during H S. He decided to play his senior year because he had many friends on the football team. Sulphur, Louisiana is a close knit community that has only one high school in the city and a lot of tradition in all sports. It is one of the largest schools in the state. He had a good season in football. The other receiver that was on the team got a scholarship to a local university and Chip stats were comparable. Chip- 6 Touchdowns, 55 receptions, other receiver 5 touchdowns, 60 receptions. While Chip excelled on the football field (I know of one fb offer from a school in Texas), he is a much better basketball player. If Chip would have played all four years of H S football I am sure he would have gotten some decent looks at football.

Could you describe his play a little? There hasn't been a ton of info online, at least that I've seen, and I'm curious to hear what someone who has seen his play a lot says. Thanks.

I have read that someone said Chip is a defensive stopper. He has the athletic ability to be a good defensive player but he is going to impress on the offensive end. Has a quick first step. Better than average outside shooter. Does a good job of finishing at the rim with an assortment of dunks and scoop shots. Has a scorers' mentality. Can get on a roll and score points quickly. Basically, has a good enough shot to have to get up on him and a good enough first step to go by and finish strong. I don't see him playing point guard. As with all freshmen, will have to adjust and step it up a notch and bring his best every day, but he will not be lacking in confidence.

Thanks for the input, good to hear from someone who's really seen him play a lot.

Nice...it would be sweet if we found a diamond in the rough here. Having a legit scorer, especially in the Big Ten, is always good.

Thanks ya heard me, your update is appreciated. I look forward to seeing Chip on the court for the Gophers this year. I have been impressed with Hollins, so if Armelin is as good or better, the Gophers have a couple of young players to get excited about for the next four years. I chatted briefly with Chip during the autograph session last Saturday at the football game and Chip was very cordial as were all of the Gopher players. I can't wait for Gopher BB to start.

Thanks for the info. Sounds like he has the ability to be a good defender but hasn't been forced to commit on that end in the past. I think he'll learn quickly that he'll have to in order to get PT with Tubby. Can't wait to see him at Tubby's Tipoff. The dunk contest may have gotten even more interesting this year.
