Flip Saunders is out of work, but not done learning.
The former Minnesota Timberwolves coach, fired three weeks ago by the Washington Wizards, was at his alma mater's Gophers men's basketball practice Monday jotting notes in a black composition book. He takes notes whenever and wherever he watches basketball - the NBA, college or high school.
Continuing education?
"Evolution," Saunders said. "You've always got to evolve as a coach."
Saunders, who turns 57 next week, spent 16 years as an NBA head coach. He's spending time now observing pro and college games, and enjoying it. It helps, of course, when you've still got about $7 million coming from your Wizards contract, which runs through the end of the 2012-13 season.
Saunders intends to return to coaching "if it's the right situation," he said.
"I'll know when it comes," said the popular former Gophers point guard who resides in Medina.
NBA or college?
"Doesn't matter either way," he said. "I always said that when I left college, you'd like to finish kind of where you started. But a lot just depends. Every job has positives, every job has negatives."
Saunders, who spent five seasons as a Gophers assistant, was already contractually committed to the Detroit Pistons when the Gophers' job that Tubby Smith ended up with became available. Had Flip been available, he clearly would have been a top consideration. He loves the University of Minnesota.
What about coaching at his alma mater some day?
"I don't know; it's tough sometimes to come back to your alma mater," Saunders said. "You never can chase jobs. You just have to make sure everything is right."
Go Gophers!!
