Flip Saunders is out of work, but not done learning.

The former Minnesota Timberwolves coach, fired three weeks ago by the Washington Wizards, was at his alma mater's Gophers men's basketball practice Monday jotting notes in a black composition book. He takes notes whenever and wherever he watches basketball - the NBA, college or high school.

Continuing education?

"Evolution," Saunders said. "You've always got to evolve as a coach."

Saunders, who turns 57 next week, spent 16 years as an NBA head coach. He's spending time now observing pro and college games, and enjoying it. It helps, of course, when you've still got about $7 million coming from your Wizards contract, which runs through the end of the 2012-13 season.

Saunders intends to return to coaching "if it's the right situation," he said.

"I'll know when it comes," said the popular former Gophers point guard who resides in Medina.

NBA or college?

"Doesn't matter either way," he said. "I always said that when I left college, you'd like to finish kind of where you started. But a lot just depends. Every job has positives, every job has negatives."

Saunders, who spent five seasons as a Gophers assistant, was already contractually committed to the Detroit Pistons when the Gophers' job that Tubby Smith ended up with became available. Had Flip been available, he clearly would have been a top consideration. He loves the University of Minnesota.

What about coaching at his alma mater some day?

"I don't know; it's tough sometimes to come back to your alma mater," Saunders said. "You never can chase jobs. You just have to make sure everything is right."

Go Gophers!!

Go Gophers!!

Never saw Flip as a realistic option should Tubby depart. A. NBA types tend to have a disdain for the college coaching ranks (even though the reverse would be much more justified) B. it's certainly not a road back to a job in the league

It helps, of course, when you've still got about $7 million coming from your Wizards contract, Now that can sure help a guy be a little picky in his next career move.

I saw that too. Outrageous. The guy's making damn near as much as I am and for doing what...watching the Gophers practice? It does appear, however, that he retains an interest in the program.

Lol you really are good as gold pulling in over 7 mil. Congrats!

Hmmm. That's about as close to saying "I'd take it" as you can be without saying it (which he can't).

Yeah, that's what I got out of it too. He certainly has the ability (read: $$$) to stay unemployed until Tubby's contract expires. I'm not pro or anti-Flip right now... I haven't really thought about it too much, but would be open to it.

There's no doubt Flip loves his school.

This team loses Ralph and gains Walker, Wally and Buggs and maybe Trevor. There's some reason for optimism. Fire Tubby and hire Flip, maybe Rodney goes pro, and there will probably be other transfers. Do you really want this roster less 3-4 guys coached by Flip over the full roster with Tubby? It's worth thinking about.

Flip was at the game tonight.

Only means he supports the school. Doesn't really mean anything else. Kevin Love was also there, doesn't mean much of anything.
I too was at the game, and like the others can't find much meaning in it. I did, however, put a good beer coat on which does mean I must now retire. Ta!

It meant the world to me.

I'm going to go out on the limb and say he will NOT be the next Gopher coach. Attractive looking woman with him though.
