Shooter: Maturi defends search process for Gophers coach, U considering Mike Haywood

I loved the swipe he took at the boosters advancing Lou Holtz's name:

A couple of Gophers boosters, disenchanted with the football coaching search, are encouraging Lou Holtz, who turns 74 next month, to return to Minnesota. No word on whether Luther Darville would be part of a package.

Also interesting to see that the Twins might retire Jesse Crain's number.

Those of us who have been thinking (somewhat" rationally have said the same thing all along.

Cut to the chase:

"I mean, figure it out," the Gophers' athletic director said. "Who coaching is going to leave their team so they could go recruiting last Sunday? For most (coaches), seasons didn't end until last Saturday. They still haven't ended for some.

"So that's irrational thought."

Maturi spent Saturday in his office.

"For anybody to come to the conclusion that the (search) process is not working is inaccurate," he said. "The process is working. We will find a coach who is a good coach, who wants to be here, and hopefully will have success when it's all said and done. We've done a lot of work."

We will have our coach by Tuesday.

Haywood

Quotes below about Haywood from Dec. 2008 when he took the Miami Ohio job.

(He doesn't have as much Head-coach experience as Kill, but if we were relegated to a MAC, C-USA, Sunbelt, etc, coach - I would take Haywood. Remember, - Miami Ohio was our only win in 2007,- they had been very bad since Hoeppner left for IN, and Haywood has won the Mac in only his 2nd year)

WHAT THEY'RE SAYING ABOUT MIKE HAYWOOD

CHARLIE WEIS, Head Football Coach, University of Notre Dame ""The Notre Dame program is very happy today for Michael Haywood and wishes him only the best at Miami University. They made a great selection of a coach who is very well prepared for an assignment like this -- and although we will dearly miss him we realize it's time for him to run his own program. Michael has both the coaching pedigree and the personal character which will carry him to a successful career as a head coach."

MACK BROWN, Head Football Coach, University of Texas "Mike is a perfect hire. He has earned the right to be a head coach with his great work at places like Texas, Notre Dame and LSU. He's a great recruiter, respects the game, and is the kind of young person we need in college athletics."

FLOYD KEITH, Executive Director, Black Coaches Association "I can't tell you how ecstatic I am, both personally and as a representative for the BCA. Mike has been a well-known candidate for several years, and his experience and resume speak for themselves. He understands how to win. Brad Bates couldn't have hired a better candidate. Miami has done itself well."

GERRY FAUST, Former Head Coach, University of Notre Dame "Miami University is the 'cradle' of college coaches, and I've known most of them. Mike Haywood is the combination of all of them. I'm confident that he will earn his way into their legendary company."

Didn't Mack Brown have similar, glowing things to say about our former coach as well? Those quotes mean nothing more than the praise on the back of a book. If you ask around enough, you can find someone to say anything.

Sounds like Haywood is a good guy, but if we can't get a bigger name than Mike Haywood, we are in real trouble.

There isn't much to go on (two years), but I've been impressed with every Miami/Ohio game I've seen this year. He looks like a real leader to me. If coaches like Petersen and Harbaugh are out of reach, a Haywood might be a good landing for the search.

This all might be true, but that still is the same sort of gamble Brewster was.

Cheap. Potential for homerun. Also the potential for epic failure.

Rittenberg tweeted this morning that Haywood isn't a candidate and never interviewed for the gopher gig.

Thank god this Buffoon won't be around to hire the next one.
