From Shooter:

"Jerry Kill's job has become tougher than expected with word that as many as 16 of the new Gophers football coach's 85 scholarship players will have to improve academically to be eligible for spring practice that begins March 24."

Go Gophers!!

So is this a team imposed ineligibility or is this ineligible as per NCAA rules? I would guess its team imposed as I'm not sure it possible to become ruled ineligible by the NCAA midsemester.

So if there's a silver lining to this, its that the "ineligible" players could be able become eligible within the next couple weeks with hardwork in the classroom and not have to sit out the entire semester.

One way to check the validity of this would be to find out how many players are wearing the brown Minnesota Loafers jerseys at morning conditioning.

Or they may not. I'll wait for something I trust more than shooter.

It's a shame to waste an opportunity to get an education at a world class university. Their degree will probably be more valuable to them than anything they'll do on the playing field after they leave the U.

So 16 guys are not doing great in class and need a last minute kick in the pants. I can't see how this is shocking in any way and unique in any way to the U. If the story was that 16 guys ARE going to miss spring practice, then that's a story.

Coach Kill has work to do to get the program to his standards. This report may not be shocking or unique to the U but I have a feeling it is to Coach Kill. If true, Coach Kill will do all he can to motivate these players but each of them will have to step it up or they will be gone.

First off...Shooter is a dip*&^!#*&^!#*&^!#*&^!# IMO.

Second, we don't have 85 scholarship players in school right now...its more like 55.

Thirdly, spring ball is mid-semester so the NCAA won't be checking scores on any players...until spring grades come out in May/June.

If this is a Coach Kill thing...GREAT! Walk the line...but Shooter is a moron in how he reported it...which is because I am guessing he doesn't understand what he is saying.

I believe the academic standards at Minnesota for eligibility are Minnesota and BigTen standards.

According to the scholarship grid at the top of the home page we have 64.

I wonder if the 16 mentioned by Shooter, might be the number of players on academic lock down, by Coach Kill? If it is, then extrapolating that to being in danger of being academically ineligible, is a stretch. Coach Kill's standards are much higher than making them eligible.

Ever think some of these guys are genuinely having a difficult time putting in long hours training while trying to maintain the required minimum GPA?

If they can't handle the amount of hours it takes to be able to train in the offseason and get sufficient grades, they will never be able to handle the actual season.

They could also be taking a heavier and/or more difficult course load in the offseason. Anyway, my original point was I don't automatically equate having a gpa below the required level to compete in athletics with "wasting" a degree.

Wasting makes it sound like all 16 of these guys are sleeping in and not going to class.

I would put more stock in this if it was anyone but Shooter.

I'm surprised he didn't preface it with, "Don't be surprised if..." or "A little birdie told me..." Maybe it was under the scandalous "Don't Print That."

They should put "Don't Print That" over the headline of Shooter's "column."

Many kids struggle with college. I don't know the exact stats but I wouldn't be surprised if 16/85 isn't too far from the percentage as a whole. I don't know why we think football players are any different than anyone else.

Good for Kill. This sounds like one more step in changing the culture. Does anyone think that culture change might also have something to do with Nick Rallis' wandering eye?

The reason it should be different with football players is because we have spent a lot of money on our academic counseling program, they get reports on attendance and the player's work, so we were not paying attention through the fall quarter. Not a big shock when there is no one in charge with the ability to say "get to work or you don't play", but still disappointing.
Just shows this team needed disciplined leadership in a big way.

I have a feeling 16 in shakey standing does not fit into Coach Kill's standards.
