Gophers football coach Tracy Claeys has a fan in former Minnesota Gov. Arne Carlson.

“He was the right person to hire,” said Carlson, who remains a Gophers booster. “I believe that because he’s so obsessed with the game — it’s not about him — it’s about the team and how you build the team. He’ll give us a very competitive product.

“But let’s face it, when you’re going up against Wisconsin, Michigan, Michigan State, Penn State, Ohio State, these are some of the best teams in the country. But I feel we can become very close. I’m very optimistic about Claeys.”
