Shooter: Gophers' coaching search turns to fired Miami Hurricanes coach Randy Shannon

This sounds like BS to me. More of the 'smokescreen' people have been talking about.

We're Surrounded by smokescreens!!!!!!!!!!!! Watch out for the stray bullets and don't choke to death from the smoke!!!

I'm beginning to think Crazy Joe whatshisname has a point about about the media. This sounds like Maturi/Mona/Bruninks are grasping at straws and grabbing the left overs. I don't think that's the case.

I think our guy is already signed, sealed and almost delivered.

You shouldn't mention bullets in a thread that in any way involves miami football.

Randy Shannon=Tim Brewster. There is no way it is him. There better not be anyway.

Surely (don't call me Shirley), there is no way Shannon should be a consideration for any head D1 job in the entire country right now. He had his chance, recruited top-end talent, and did nothing with it. Next.

Yea as far as "smoke screens" go every new piece of info we get is a smoke screen. I don't know if i believe it anymore. As far as Shannon goes, he couldn't win with top talent. How is he going to win with mediocre talent? Also, if they hired him that would all but prove they missed out on several guys. You can't tell me they fired Brewster midseason to hire a coach they had no idea would be available when the hire came down.

His QB got hurt. His team is young. He should (and will) get another shot somewhere down the line.

I hope it is not with the gophers.

Based upon the "ratings" of their recruiting classes and thus the talent surrounding their QB, Adam Lueck should be able to play QB for them and succeed.

Shannon will get another job, but he shouldn't this year.

I don't know why I'm even discussing this - it's irritating to even think of the U considering him (which I don't believe they are).

He is not a true freshman. Which is what Shannon was forced to play when Harris went down.

I'm saying Jacory Harris wasn't that good when he did play. I've never seen anything Shannon has done on the field that is impressive honestly. He's a good guy, solid recruiter, runs a clean program but he hasn't figured out the X's & O's yet. Maybe he would come here & do better then he did in Miami but I doubt it...

But at this point if we're not gonna be able to land any kind of real name then I guess we'd have to settle for Shannon...

Shannon got hosed at Miami, but if they can get Gruden, that's a hard hire to pass up (assuming he stays there for the duration). If it came down to Shannon and RichRod, I'd rather have Shannon and I think we could make a much worse hire, but there are a few others I think that would be better moves to make.

I would be completely shocked if came here though. It just doesn't add up with his history.

How exactly did Shannon get hosed at Miami? He was 28-22 overall and 16-16 in conference. Not the type of record that will get it done at Da U.

Shannon was 5-3 in conference play this year. With a young team.

Most people do not get fired for that. Especially when they took over a program in shambles just 4 years ago (Miami was in shambles).
I think Shannons biggest problem was that he had a rebuilding job at a school with an administration that thought it should be a reloading job (quick fix).

As Rosemountain just said, they had a young team and he was 5-3 in conference.

When Coker left, along with a 3-5 conference record, that program had some serious issues with suspensions, fights, etc. Shannon got four years to fix the regression caused by Coker. They lost their QB and ended up with a true frosh for a couple of games.

I think Shannon still had the program going the right way back where they wanted to be. That said, it's hard to pass up a hire like Gruden if you can make it happen. But I think you only replace Shannon there if you have a proven head coach like Gruden to bring in.

If Gruden isn't the replacement, he should have gotten at least another year at Miami.

I don't see Randy Shannon in our future, can't fathom a Paul Chryst hire, and would be offended by a Jeff Jagodzinski hire. When this whole search began I posted a list of 15 candidates and have steadily whittled that list down, eliminating one candidate at a time. One of the men on that list has been Mike Stoops, who I think would b a great hire. Seeing as his candidacy doesn't seem to have any legs and he is very unlikely to be the guy who Maturi was "surprised would be interested", I am removing him from my list and re-shuffling the deck. The final three on my list are...

1. Troy Calhoun
2. Jerry Kill
3. Al Golden
