Shooter: Gopher great Tyrone Carter turns down spot on Michigan State staff

I could see him eventually being added to Kill's staff. If there's ever an opening that is.

yea next spot that opens up i feel like hes gotta be number one on coach kills list

OK, I'll pose the question:

Can he coach?

Look, the guy was a great player for the Gophs, and had a nice career in the NFL - but that doesn't automatically mean he would be a good coach. The list of good-to-great players who became successful coaches is a fairly short one in all sports. It's much more common for people who were average-to-poor players to turn into successful coaches.

Does anyone know what position he was offered at MSU?

I can envision a couple scenarios where Carter could join Kill's staff. 1) Tracy Claeys getting a head coaching job somewhere, with Jay Sawvel then shifting up to the DC spot, thus opening up the DB coaching spot. 2) Someone hiring Jay Sawvel as DC, which would also open up the DB coaching spot. If the Gophers defense continues to improve, both scenarios are plausible. Whether he can coach or not, who knows, I'm guessing he's picked up a thing or two over the years though and I would support it.

Almost more importantly is the question "can he recruit?". We all know Tim Brewster can't coach, but he's a great addition to the Florida State staff b/c he can recruit.

Also, TC was a phenomenal form tackler. I'm guessing he can coach technique.

I think if he really wants to be on the staff, you can find a position for him. Offer him a lower end salary and see how he does. Having former top end players involved in the program can't be a bad thing.

If he was offered a position with MSU's defense it's a good bet he can do whatever they wanted him to do well enough to do it here. It's hard not to be impressed with what Dantonio's staff has done over there...I think it's safe to assume they know what they're doing, especially on the defensive side of the ball.
