Bobby Bell predicts the football Gophers will win a Big Ten championship in the next couple of years. “I believe in what they’re doing,” Bell told Sports Headliners.

Bell was a two-time All-American tackle for Minnesota in 1961-1962. He won the 1962 Outland Trophy as the nation’s most outstanding lineman. Gophers football historians place him at or near the top of any list of the program’s greatest players.

Although he lives in the Kansas City area, Bell was in town last weekend for the Gophers game on Saturday, and to watch the Chiefs, his former NFL team, take on the Vikings. He was asked if Minnesota can win the Big Ten in the next five years?

“Oh, yeah,” Bell answered. “I would say in another year or two. …”

Bell not only believes in head coach Jerry Kill but also bases his optimism about the program’s future on the support for athletics by University of Minnesota president Eric Kaler. Another reason Bell is upbeat about the Gophers is the commitment to build new football facilities that will help with recruiting.

When Bell watches Minnesota he sees a roster that is only a few key players away from being “trouble” for the rest of the Big Ten. More talent and the coaching of Kill and staff will deliver a title, he believes.

Go Gophers!!

He must not read the GopherHole. Smart man!

Well, to be fair, Bell had some great things to say about the potential of the program under Brewster as well. That being said, I like Bell's approach - it's better to be an optimist and be wrong, then a pessimist and be right!

Go Gophers!!

We do have one big advantage going for us; we're in the West.

Don't have to beat out Ohio State, Michigan State, and Michigan for the division. Just have to beat one of them once in the title game

Well if Mr Bell looks at our schedule the next two years, he may be on to something.

When the Kill hire was made, I told a buddy, fellow Gopher fan who lives in Bemidji that Kill would take us to the Rose Bowl in 2015, and I would pay to take him with me to Pasadena....

Looks like I am (very likely) off the hook for this year (My wife would have killed me).... But I'd not bet against Mr. Bell....

Outside of wearing maroon and gold glasses and letting them bilnd you how can you believe this. I guess it gets the die hard part of the fan base fired up but they tend to be fired up anyway. Causal fans reaction is probably "yeah sure. Heard it before"

If kill is the guy. We will learn it the next two years.

If we top out at a 5 loss season, then we probably know he won't ever get it done. If we have a season where we truly look like a legitimate contender (I wouldn't consider last year that, 5-losses, would have had to beat Wisconsin and then beat Ohio state who already beat us) I think it means he has a nearly endless tenure to try to win it.

So you don't think the new facilities will heavily influence his recruiting? You think we can judge him before he's had them for even a year?

In related news, Mike Ditka picks the Bears to beat the Packers every year.

Again not that farfetched, with next year's schedule. Non con gets easier, Purdue, Rutgers and Maryland are going to be dumpster fires next year. Illinois will have a new coaching staff. No Michigan, no Sparty, no Ohio State.

I was less saying what I think will happen and more commenting on what will happen.

If last year is still the best season under kill at the end of 2017, I personally don't think he will be the coach anymore.

Minnesota still has to climb back up the west ladder. They still have to prove they can beat Nebraska and Iowa while not losing to an Illinois. Looks like Iowa is back along with Northwestern. The cross over games might be easier but they have to beat the teams in the west.
