Shama: U Hires Quiet & Strong Coach in Claeys; Jim Carter says "right choice"

per Shama:

A news conference this morning to announce Tracy Claeys as the Gophers new head football coach isn’t surprising. Multiple sources indicated his interim tag was to be removed last week or this week, and that the 46-year-old Claeys met with University of Minnesota president Eric Kaler on Monday.

Claeys worked for former Gophers head coach Jerry Kill as an assistant for 21 seasons including five at Minnesota as defensive coordinator. During that time Claeys demonstrated his football intelligence and ability as a teacher. He comes across as analytical and authentic. He can figure out schemes and game plans, but he is also personable. He deserves much of the credit for turning the Minnesota defense into the pride of the team.

Former Gophers captain Jim Carter told Sports Headliners this morning he thinks the hire is the “right choice” and the news likely is well received by most ex-players from the U. “I’d be really surprised if it’s not,” Carter said. “There maybe a couple naysayers.”

Go Gophers!!

References to Jim Carter remind me of one of the better stories I have heard about Gopher football. A long time Gopher football fan that graduated from the U in 1964 told me he attended a practice once when Jim was a player. During the practice a line coach told a player to get down in a stance and block. The player had major problems following that order, and the coach stood over him and yelled 'You call that a f...ing block??' 'Carter, get over here and show him how to block'. The coach then gave the Hut, and Carter launched out of his stance and blasted the kid with a block that sent him flying several yards backwards. Then the coach stood over the kid and yelled 'Now that's a f....ing block!!" He guy that told me the story also said he saw Carter make one of the greatest runs he has ever seen (he has remained a solid fan and has attended all the games this year). In a game against Purdue, when Purdue was good, he saw Carter run for a TD after breaking four tackles.

I don't accept Carter quotes without a picture or video. I need to see if he is wearing a scarf to know if he is serious or not.

That's one of the better stories you've heard about Gopher football?

When did Jim Carter become the voice of Gopher football alumni? And why?
