Per Shama:

Don’t be surprised if adjustments are made soon to the contracts of Golden Gophers men’s basketball coach Niko Medved and women’s coach Dawn Plitzuweit. The two reportedly have annual current deals paying them $3 million and $900,000 respectively.

“…We are having those (contract) conversations with both coaches,” University of Minnesota athletics director Mark Coyle told Sports Headliners on Thursday. Contract changes must be approved by President Rebecca Cunningham and the Board of Regents.

The Gopher women were 13-5 in Big Ten games, achieving 13 wins in league play for only the third time in their history. The 24-9 overall Gophers were voted No. 15 (Associated Press) and 18 (coaches) in the polls, their best finish since 2004-2005. In Plitzuweit’s third season she led Minnesota to a No. 4 seed in the NCAA Tournament and had two wins. That was the program’s highest seed since 2005.

Go Gophers!!
Definitely earned and deserved!!

Coach P has 5 years left on her contract that was re-worked last June (2025). She's a really good coach who has done a really good job. I hope the new contract is more about an extension of years than a material increase in $$$. In the new era of paying players, the economics of the non-money-making sports need to be taken into account.

For fiscal year 2025 (Coach P's second year), Gopher WBB had total operating revenues of $1,638,813, and total compensation paid to the head coach, assistant coaches and support staff was $2,381,561 ($1,119,314 for Coach P + $936,975 for the assistant coaches + $325,572 for support staff). The total operating deficit for Gopher WBB for fiscal year '25 was -$4,950,586 (9th among the Big Ten's 16 public universities). Gopher WBB and WBB in general needs to be reducing their annual deficits, not growing them.

They increased the price of season tickets across all sports by excluding the sales tax from the cost. They also doubled the donation requirement this season for WBB. The best way to bring in more money is to put a product on the court that sells tickets.

They are also still working on a naming sponsor for Williams Arena.

Both men's and women's basketball have the biggest potential upsides for revenue at the U right now, but only if they have a consistent marketable product

I knew that the WBB ticket bargain wouldn't last forever. Still bought my 3 as it's still a bargain, just not the big bargain.
