Basketball coach Richard Pitino’s contract with the University of Minnesota includes bonus compensation based on performance by the Gophers. His team won its opening Big Ten Men’s Basketball Tournament game last night against Penn State and if the Gophers become tourney champions on Sunday he will earn $25,000 in bonus money.

Pitino’s contract incentives include $50,000 if the Gophers are invited to the NCAA Tournament. He earns additional payments of $50,000 each if Minnesota plays in the tournament’s Sweet 16 and Final Four. An NCAA national championship rewards him with a $100,000 bonus.

Pitino would have received a $50,000 bonus if the Gophers had a winning record during the Big Ten’s regular season. A regular season conference championship would also reward him with a $50,000 bonus.

Pitino won’t win conference or national coach of the year honors in 2014 but there are bonuses in his contract for those awards. He could earn $25,000 for Big Ten Coach of the Year and $50,000 for National Coach of the Year.

Go Gophers!!

If Pitino won a national title. I'd be throwing more than a 100k bonus at the man. But that's just me. Seems like chump change when compared to the benefits that a national title would bring.

If he wins a national title, the bonus will be chump change compared to the contract he'd get in the following offseason.

I think the incentives are realistic. Coming into this season, most people had us finishing in the way lower portions of the B1G. Those predictions have already been exceeded.

Finished what,7th? Yeah awesome job

I expected us to finish 9th or 10th, so 7th seems pretty good. Didn't they finish 7th last year too? This year's team doesn't have nearly as much talent as last year's so 7th is pretty good.

The big ten this year is not nearly at the level it was last year.

They exceeded my expectations this year with their record, but not necessarily their level of play. I'm not saying that the level of play was bad, but it was about what I expected. Maybe that's just the way I'm feeling now after this game. I was also thinking Indiana and Illinois were going to be a little better than they were, but both were down. If I would have known that Mathieu and Walker were going to be this good, I would have expected a little more as well. Landing Macura and Travis would have changed my outlook even if we had lost a few more games. Of all the things that happened this season, that is what I'm most disappointed about.

I'm pretty confident that bonus' like these are quite standard in the contracts of most college coaches. I'd have expected more for a national championship, toss in 250k for that.
