Gophers basketball coach Richard Pitino, who was hired about 14 months ago, will receive a raise and if the increase isn’t agreed to yet it will be soon. Pitino’s initial salary was set at $500,000, plus $700,000 of supplemental compensation.

Go Gophers!!

I what RP brings to the program and the NIT trophy is OK but isn't this a bit premature? Can't we wait until we see how the coming season ends up? Woody must have made some hiring promises.

Coach came into a tough situation with no blood. He brought in some excitement and helped his pups win the NIT. Now we all, Coach P included, have higher expectations. Let's. Enjoy the ride and bitch later.

Woody must have made some hiring promises.

I hope so. The former regime's policy of contract extensions while finger crossing was getting old.

I have zero issue with "prove yourself and we will reward you" approach. The excitement delivered during the season and near NCAA/ NIT championship run deserves some recognition. Not a lifetime contract, but certainly acknowledgement of results delivered.

I believe RP is the lowest paid coach in the B10 with the exception for Rutgers, whose coach makes half of what RP is paid.

No problem with this. We missed the NCAA's, but he did win more games in one season than anyone before him.

Seems like a good move to preempt anyone making an early run at him after next season. Show some love early, show it often and demonstrate that we are committed to winning with Rico all the way. Now build the damn practice facility already!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Forget the raise...use the mula to get Pit a practice facility started this will give Pit the chance to recruit better , win more , prove his desire to stay here is more than empty rhetoric, and winning equals more handle and more money to pay the coach

I don't see how this stops someone form making a run at him and just raising the price.... Don't disagree with them giving him a raise, I wouldn't have done it however. The price of poker just got a bit steeper if he does get the raise. "Success" will get you that.

The higher the price to play the hand, the less people who will try to play it. If we were going to get into a bidding war, it would happen regardless of the starting point. I'd say its a good move in that it rewards him for having a decent first season, and it may scare away a potential bidder. Of course, you never know what the perfect move is in advance.

Don't disagree with any of that.

I do disagree with anyone that may think that giving him a raise this year will stop us from having to give him a raise the when someone offers more for his services.

(I'm uncertain if that was anyone's intent)

I think it shows confidence in and loyalty to Pitino - those things can go a long way.

As we have seen in D-1 BB...getting a coach to leave a decent job for a good job is really difficult. Again, if its one of the top 10 jobs in the country...we may not be able to defend right now...but I don't think it will be. It'll be a similar job to ours, maybe a bit better, but with a 250% raise.

Money aint everything...so if we can show him some early love, get the damn practice facility built and demonstrate that long term, our program will have the money to stay on top...he may make this his 30 year home and a legacy for himself.

Maroon is the new blue!

really...only 3 out 351 D1 coaches have a 30 year or greater tenure...coaches leave or get canned, that is the fact of D1 coaching.

No raise please. Pitino agreed to the contract, and it is laughable to assert he has outperformed it.

Let's not be insecure. Let's save our money. Pitino isn't going anywhere for awhile. Make him earn it.

I'd much rather see a raise 'too early' than 3 years too late as it was under dithering Joel Maturi. Yes, he signed the contract. But he's among the lowest paid in the conference and there's no harm in being proactive.

Wouldn't have a problem with a raise for Pitino (like Teague did with Kill before he produced a .500 B1G season), but all things being equal there's no reason to rush. We'll know a lot more after next season. Pitino has an experienced core group of players returning (4 seniors and a junior), and most of the B1G's heavy hitters (all except the Badgers) incur significant personnel losses.

Pit already is getting a contractual raise, the team digressed from NCAA to NIT he struck out on all 4 major home state recruits....a little early boys to canonize him

I'm inclined to believe the opinion of Mr. Teague as opposed to those that don't hold the poistion, don't have the experience in big time college sports and those that aren't inside the program.

This idea that a coach signed a low ball contract and you must hold him to it is idiotic if you value a coach and want to retain him/her.

Norwood has taught us all how unimportant fall recruits are. With Coach P. and staff able to build a squad with 7 spring recruits out of 10 scholarships, the program has been elevated to a bubble team in year two.

Your way of thinking has me convinced that we need to get together and call the Ajax Liquor Store. And NO vermouth.

Ajax Liquor Store will settle all discussions.

Dithering idiot would be much more accurate than brain trust.

Historical context dithering idiot, but thank you for your accurate yet pointless information on the current tenure of D1 coaches.

Elaborate just how Norwood did that?

Pitino is the highest paid NCAA head coach never to reach the big dance ...no raises for high hopes, only for results

He also just completed year 2 of his tenure as a D1 HC and year 1 here at Minny. So what is your point other than to blather on your non-sense.

Now that is funny. I'd like a raise for not succeeding either.
