"Former Gophers football player Mike Sherels told Sports Headliners he plans to ask the new head football coach for a position on the Minnesota staff. He also said his brother Marcus is learning on the Vikings practice squad and has been mentored by All-Pro cornerback Antoine Winfield."

Go Gophers!!

This wouldn't be a bad idea (provided Sherels can coach as well as he played). It certainly would help quell any disturbance coming from M-Clubbers.

Don't know much about Mike, but his brother Marcus seems like a great kid. I had a class with him my last semester of undergrad and he was always paying attention and participating in class, unlike some of his other teammates who would get bitched at by the professor nearly every day. Hopefully Marcus can make it as a starter in the NFL at some point.

Mike has posted on the 'Hole a few times. If he's still around, best wishes.

That kid could really play the run between the tackles. Man oh man. Kid had one direction: downhill.

This is cool.

Mike is a nice guy. Talked to him at a couple basketball games in the past.

If he wants a job, he's gonna have to suck it up and become a GA. No other way around it.

My favorite memory of Mike Sherels was his leaping interception in the infamous Insight Bowl game vs. Texas Tech. It was a great play and set the tone...well, for the first half anyway.

True on the GA thing, but it would be great if we could cycle recent grads into the GA track. Continuity and program-building and all that.

I've posted this before, before his interception in the endzone at the end of the first half of the 06 IA game is probably my favorite Gopher memory. My dad and I went ballistic.

Mike won all 4 traveling trophies too, not many can say that.

If you can help former players get coaching experience, and help them land coaching jobs, that could lead to recruiting players who might be have coaching in mind, and could also leave you with a bunch of coaches out there, all dreaming of landing the Minnesota job someday.

I thought I read on here that Brewster and Sherels had a deal in place that he was going to GA after the classes (and friends) he played with were through the system. Obviously, Brewster got let go which kind of derailed those plans.

He coached defense for Prior Lake last year, and guess what, any team with a mediocre passing game ripped them a new one.
