Miami athletic director Blake James, a graduate of Coon Rapids High School and Minnesota State Mankato, is a name that could draw speculation for the Gophers AD opening. James has been athletic director at the Florida school for more than two years, and he has extensive experience in college athletics including administrative and development work.

It will be interesting to see if the University of Minnesota hires a search firm to assist with hiring the next athletic director who could be someone with Minnesota roots (the opposite of former AD Norwood Teague who came with an East Coast background and didn’t have relationships here). Perhaps a firm that will be considered for the search is College Sports Solutions founded by Jeff Schemmel, who worked for 13 years in the Gophers athletic department and is the former athletic director at San Diego State.

Go Gophers!!

Why would the U willingly dive into the cesspool that is the University of Miami athletics department? No thanks, even if he is from Coon Rapids.

Taking the AD position at Miami automatically makes you scum?

As for hiring Jeff Schemmel's search firm: Humor, insanity, irony, etc.-take your pick.

San Diego State University President Stephen Weber announced the resignation of Athletic Director Jeff Schemmel yesterday, saying Schemmel “disappointed the university” with actions that included the “improper use of state funds.”

Schemmel traveled to Alabama in January to have a tryst with a woman and didn’t have university business there, the woman testified under oath in a deposition this year.

Schemmel’s resignation came after an SDSU investigation determined that there were irregularities in his reimbursement requests.

Weber said a “pattern of judgments and actions” by Schemmel “ultimately put us in a place where Jeff could no longer fruitfully serve this university and department.”

Welcome Iggy! I'd think Schemmel's business venture might have some obstacles to overcome. Seems like an odd startup to undertake given his circumstances. Thanks for the info.

I graduated with Blake and went to his same church. Rock solid guy, loves sports and we could do a hell of lot worse for an AD. I hope he gets strong consideration.

Speaking of search firms, our mysteriously vetting challenged friends at Parker Executive have gotten themselves into an Iowa hog pile.

"An executive search firm that specializes in higher education has come under scrutiny in recent weeks after assisting in two controversial appointments.

The Georgia-based Parker Executive Search assisted in the University of Iowa’s recent presidential search, which led to the selection of businessman Bruce Harreld. The search process has been criticized by students and faculty members, some of whom question Parker’s vetting of Harreld after he revealed his résumé inaccurately listed his current employment.

Parker has also come under fire for helping the University of Minnesota select Norwood Teague as its athletic director in 2012"...

“Parker Search doesn't seemed to have vetted it or pointed that out to anyone,” Katherine Tachau, a history professor and president of Iowa’s American Association of University Professors chapter, said of Harreld’s résumé. “He’s self-employed and he’s listing it that way to imply that he actually is an officer in a firm.” Tachau highlighted how "false information on your résumé" is a violation of Iowa's business college's honor code.

Iowa is paying Parker $200,000, plus expenses, for conducting the search. Minnesota paid Parker $90,000 in the search that led to Teague’s hire"
