Summary:
Lane Kiffin publicly accuses Urban Meyer of cheating on Thursday. Unfortunately, what Meyer did was not a violation of any NCAA or SEC rule. In reality, Kiffin had violated the SEC Code of Ethics which outlaws “public criticism of other member institutions, their staffs or players”. He had to apologize that same day.

The kicker? Kiffin was involved in some shadiness with the recruit he accused Meyer of cheating to recruit. Kiffin boasted of how he convinced the player to lie to the UF coaching staff so that they thought he was committed to be a Gator (he was a UF verbal but signed with UT). He also pissed off the recruit’s HS coach…how? He pretended to be the recruit and sent text messages to the coach saying he would sign with Tenn (http://www.palmbeachpost.com/sports...preps/entries/2009/02/05/kiffin_pretende.html).

WTF? I’m beginning to wonder if we got lucky by not hiring this guy. He could turn out to be a huge winner in the SEC (and with how much they’re paying him and his staff he better) but I think he could make our turkey necked friend in Madison look like a choir boy.

I had heard rumors of his machiavellian tendencies while at USC. Sounds like there may have been something to them.

Nothing new to the SEC, just different characters. Steve Spurrier and Phil Fulmer used to go back and forth all the time and it just adds to the Florida vs Tennessee rivalry.

But not so much for public display! It will be interesting to see what happens with Kiffin, especially since he is the new kid on the block! I suspect there will be some reprecussions on this and he may very well wish he had just kept quiet!

This situation kind of falls under the "you can't make this stuff up" category. I'm not completely sure who the true villain is here. Is it Meyer for calling the kid while he was visiting a conference and rival school? Is it Kiffin for trying to lure the kid away (which he actually managed to do) and then complaining when Meyer tried to intercede? Or is it Richardson who seemed to effectively talk out of both sides of his mouth until signing day?

The more this situation develops, the more ridiculous it gets. If this is par for the course in SEC country when it comes to recruiting practices, then I'm VERY glad to be a member of the Big Ten. This is one of the most ludicrous examples of five-year-olds in a sandbox that I've maybe ever seen.

Having said that, it is both funny and entertaining though....:p

I don't know Spurrier used to put it out in the wide open quite a bit, the classic is still you cannot spell Citrus Bowl without UT.

If I remember correctly the public feuding was a little less...well, I don't know how to describe it. But I don't recall either Spurrier or Fulmer accusing the other of cheating (and I could definitely be wrong...I don't know the SEC as well).

There is no doubt that the open public feud is nothing new in the SEC though!

Remember the uproar

that our band caused by playing Rocky Top to honor our Tennessee hosts at the Music City Bowl???? Had no idea that the Arkansas fans would take that so personally!!!

WOW!

Makes me a little glad not to have Kiffin here too. The whole, "Now I'm gonna call them (Florida) out here in public" routine seemed a little too showy for not knowing the rules. I'm guessing a little embarrassing for UT as well. It seems like he's starting on shaky ground, and calling out the giant with no ammunition is not a good start. I can see Florida just pummeling them next year, especially now that they've landed Ra' Shede Hage... and Hayo Carpent... I love the Gophers!

I would imagine that this will not limit the excitement that the UT fans have for him and his staff. He is bringing in the coaches and level of talent that they want. Stealing two former commits from Florida is no small feat either.

His stunt worked like a charm.

We are talking about TN on this board as though they still compete at the highest level in the sport. They fielded a team last year that was about as good as Purdue, and far worse than Northwestern.

Step One in building a nationally-recognized program is to get the nation to notice that you're playing. Step Two is to win. No one is expecing Tennessee to beat Florida next year. So Kiffin is dangerous. If he wins after all this trash-talking he will have made himself larger than life. If he loses .... he can say that they're still rebuilding and expect to beable to compete in the future.

Yea, playing to the home crowd there. Its like Bucky bashing. No self respectable Gopher fan tires of it.

Great points. He only needs to please one group of fans and that is the Tennessee fans. The easiest way to do that is by taking pot shots at your biggest rival. If he is hated by the Florida fans I guess he knows he is doing his job effectively and is scaring them a little which Coach Fulmer had not been able to do for some time.

Glad he is representing Bloomington so well!

What a POS
