SEC Players in 2023 Portal

Here’s current count of SEC players in the transfer portal. Texas A$M leads with 25. Lots of movement. As if today (12/16), over 1000 players have entered the 2023 portal. About 100 have committed to new teams. This has got to be playing havoc with HS recruiting.

I haven’t seen it mentioned if we have. A couple of them have already committed and I would guess a lot of them are looking for NIL money that we don’t have.

1000 already and we haven’t even hit the end of the semester when you’d think most would be moving on! Then add spring ball which will bring another mass exodus. Recruiting was tough before? Man alive it has to be 10x harder now with this. Good talent leaving because of NIL money (think Bucky), very talented players leaving because they haven’t gotten the playing time yet (Booker), and add in high school players it’s a lot of scenarios to consider. “Son, how important is it to get an education or are you just looking to get paid”? “Young man, if you don’t start by year two would you see yourself transferring?” Good thing PJ eats difficult conversations for breakfast!

It is the Wild, Wild West out there right now. Very hard, I would think, to have a disciplined and structured approach to roster creation when everything seems to be changing daily during this open portal period (overlapping the HS early signing period). There are certainly instances of the rich getting even richer (Michigan, so far this year). I hope we improve enough this year to at least hold the pace we've gotten to with PJ.

25 players! That’s more than an entire recruiting class. This has got to be exhausting for coaches, now you have to recruit a full HS class and in some cases a double digit class of portal transfers.

I think many here will be disappointed where Elijah Jeudy ends up.
