The new offense with the new quarterback looked a lot like previous versions. Unimaginative, mistake-prone, lacking firepower.

Same old, same old Gophers.

Their best offensive play of the night came on a catch and fumble that delivered a fortuitous bounce. Other than that, not much.

Sure, the Gophers were missing their best player, running back Darius Taylor, in Thursday’s season opener, but all the flowery talk throughout fall camp about the arrival of a new quarterback landed with a thud in a 19-17 season-opening loss to North Carolina in a contest that will not be archived in the catalog of memorable college football games.

The Gophers delivered a dud start to finish.

First-game issues aside, the offense as run by Max Brosmer looked a lot like the relatively pedestrian offenses of P.J. Fleck’s past teams.

A disturbing similarity with recent offenses was the very poor performance of the lauded, experienced offensive line. They gave up far to many pressures and sacks on pass protection.

Another similarity was failure of wide receivers to get open. Several sacks and busted plays were Brosmer running sideways looking for an open receiver.
 

After only one game, there is nothing to argue about on this. It's a spot on analysis of a one-game season.

the 3 step drop passing attack actually looked quite good. The delayed handoff/PA options looked poor. Which is exactly what happens against a team that stunts and twists like UNC does and it's hard for OLs who are set up in zone blocking to hand off all those guys accurately. These are football 101 things.
 



I think we all will be holding our breath a little bit on whether the QB is any good but for God sake, he certainly didn’t get a lot of help from the OL yesterday.
 

I’m not that down on the offense. We moved the ball with ease a few times. Just have to be more consistent and receivers need to get better separation while QB has to be on time. That might seem like a lot we need to go right but a couple of games and we’ll be alright.

Ya, but we have the 350th ranked OC in all of college football, so how can that be?
 


Not only did they suck - they were forcing an offensive philosophy that clearly doesn’t work and is eye-gouging to watch.

I read it somewhere else and will try to paraphrase here. The B1G west is painful and has been horrendous forever. But most teams are like a drunken good time with a yakkety-sax background. Watching the Gophs is like a deep K-hole with a grunge background. It’s not fun - it’s dark.

Not much hope based on last nights echoing of recent year’s ineptitude.
 

Not sure it was a new offense. More a new QB.
