Got a couple scheduling questions for the 'hole.

1. When do they usually announce game times for the upcoming season? I realize that some of the late-season game times are announce in the middle of the season. What i really want to know is when we can expect the game-time of the air force game.

2. What sort of games would people like scheduled in the two open slots for the 2010 season? There is a season opener, and the game between USC and big ten opener vs. NWestern. Easier games, harder games, home, away, MAC, Big12,....? What does everyone want to see?

for #1...

I'm guessing it will be an 11:30 am start for the Air Force game. While I hope its a late afternoon start, It is kind of a waste of "two firsts", being the first ever game and the first night game...I'm guessing they will save the first night game for the Big-Ten TCF opener vs the d-bags from the east...

If the Athletic Dept has their way it will be a night game. That is straight from assistant AD Phil Esten. They want a night game for a better atmosphere. TV will make the final call but the U wants a primetime game.

The way I understood things, they generally announced game times 2 weeks before each specific game. At least that was how things were done during the big ten season, not quite sure about non conference scheduling.

I feel a bit of Deja Vu disagreeing with Mr. Esten. I don't care about prime time, get the game on ESPN or the Duece, or the Ocho for all that matters and play it during the day. Play the first night game any other weekend. This ridiculousness is fitting for a MAC school, not a B10 school with a new stadium. Not EVERYONE is going to watch this game anyway, so what the hell?

No offense, but I think the anticipation level would be even higher (assuming that's possible) if fans were waiting all day for kick-off. For me it has to do with tailgating. I'd rather get a whole day to hang out and get excited then 3 hours. Personally I'll be bummed if its an 11AM kick...2:30 would be ok. And how is trying to set up the best atmosphere possible MAC like? I don't think its about getting the largest # of folks watching on TV. I think its about getting the best atmosphere for Gopher fans.

I'd like to know why we're scheduled to play OSU on the road in consecutive years.

I'd like to know why we're scheduled to play OSU on the road in consecutive years.

It's because of the Big Ten's unbalanced schedule. Each school only plays 8 of the other 10 teams each year. Every 2 years the two teams you don't play are changed. For example, last season (and in '07) we didn't play MSU/PSU. This season is the start of a new 2 year cycle where we don't play Indiana or Michigan.

Also factored in is the fact that every team has 2 protected rivalry games that get played every season (ours are WI and IA). While the schedulers try to make sure the home/away/home/away order is maintained when the "switch" happens every 2 years, there are times when its not possible. That's why we play OSU on the road last year and this year, why we played Mich on the road back to back in '04 and '05, etc. It's pretty much an unavoidable part of the B10 schedule.

Interesting, thanks for the information. I figured it was a result of that but I thought they would try to avoid that as much as possible.

I want 2:30 for the opener. College football= Saturday afternoon.....I like having Saturday nights free.

I have a master's degree in predicting upcoming game times

So here is my take on when kickoff could be for the opening game at TCF Bank Stadium.

I'll break down the other Big 10 games scheduled that and then the few other games of potential national significance that networks may pick up for prime time or mid-afternoon start.

The Big 10 games fall into 3 categories:

1) USC at Ohio State --> ABC prime time with 7pm CST kickoff already scheduled. The preeminent game to be played this weekend and this game has no peers.

2) Towson State at Northwestern
Illinois State at Illinois
Central Michigan at Michigan State
Western Michigan at Indiana

Each of the above has 1100 CST kickoff on the BTN written all over it. None can be justified as being worthy of anything but an early kickoff.

3) Air Force at Minnesota.
Syracuse at Penn State
Iowa at Iowa State
Purdue at Oregon
Notre Dame at Michigan
Fresno State at Wisconsin

A case could be made for each of these to be showcased in either the evening or the 2:30pm CST kickoff slots.

I'll predict that Syracuse at Penn State gets an 1200 EST kickoff time on either ESPN or ESPN2 given that these schools have a large alumni base in the east which makes for attractive ratings but Syracuses' ineptitude the past few years and new coaching staff make this game an anticipated blowout not worthy of more coveted kickoff time.

Iowa at Iowa State. Being that FOX sports owns the rights to Big 12 football games this should be picked up by FOX which can then dictate the start time. Especially with the oppresive non-conference matchups that the Big 12 features that day. Being that FOX also broadcasts PAC 10 football also it is conceivable that they would also feature the Purdue at Oregon tilt. Like the Big 12 the PAC 10 also features less than intriguing non-conference matchups save for the big game mentioned above the UCLA at Tennessee. My bet - look for FOX to pick up both of these game with the Iowa at Iowa State game getting either an 1100 CST or 2:30 like kickoff time and the Purdue at Oregon game to be broadcast with an 9pm CST kickoff.

This then leaves the Gopher game, the Pride of the San Joaquin Valley vs. the red devils to the east and the Notre Dame at Michigan game left. Sorry, but we lose the matchup for TV ratings so I think ABC will feature Charlie's wounded knee vs. the quarterbackless skunk bears for a 3:30 EST kickoff.

What about Fresno State and Wisconsin? Hopefully this game is palatable to ESPN or its sister The Deuce and will show it up against the Penn State-Syracuse tilt. This is the game I'm not sure where it could land however.

Well, where does the Gopher game get placed? Prime time baby. How? Luckily there are scant offerring of scintillating matchups in the college football world that day. A few other games that may get placed opposite the USC-OSU tilt on ESPN include: UCLA at Tennessee, Mississippi State at Auburn and TCU at Virginia. South Carolina and Georgia could also be included but will probably be picked up by CBS in the afternoon if they are broadcasting games at that stage. I think the BTN will roll our the red carpet for us. I can see them sending their whole crew set up a stage ala Gameday. I'd look for a 6pm CST kickoff so as not conflict with the beginning of the OSU-USC game.

Fact of the day: Sunset for September, 12 2009 is for 7:29pm. Gonna love that east-west stadium orientation.

need to correct on that one. the Ohio State vs USC game is on Espn, not ABC.

gophersfan, thanks for pointing that out

I get so used the marquee matchups in primetime being available on the major networks I didn't even bother looking to see if that was the case for the OSU-USC. Typically the Disney Corp. monopolizes Saturday evenings in the fall with college football on each of their channels.

I guess in the end it still doesn't change my view. I still think we're getting an evening game on the BTN.
