Doogie where was the coverage of the scrimmage Saturday night, or did I fall asleep during a short blurb? Covering car races instead of the Gophers?

WCCO - Great + promo for Brewster on RSS.
KARE - Great
KSTP- ? Maybe I fell asleep

ABC was showing the night race from Bristol, and their coverage went later than 10:00. Not sure what they did during the 10 PM newscast.

Sports seemed to be on at the normal time, it's usually the last to run every night. The car coverage was part of JC Long's sportscast.

I was on St. Paul Saints duty last night, so can't speak for Chris & producer James... but I know when I left after doing radio Friday night, we were at the mercy of the assignment desk... in other words, with 2 long Favre days during the week, our 2 sports shooters were worn out and had eaten up a ton of overtime... I promised, and will continue to promise better coverage than the other TV stations... I never promised that we would be at every single event... with a department of 6 total (Strib has 30ish), it's impossible to cover everything.

We put in a request a week ago to have Brewster in-studio next Sunday (willing to tape earlier, or do it live based on his schedule)... as of 2 days ago, we had not heard back... good for Rosie to do something tonight.

.

Given your lack of resources, have you considered crowdsourcing your coverage? Offer a nominal payment, say $250, for video and a brief recap of events. You and your editors could set the time limit and general tone and only the submission selected to air would get paid.

PM me if you'd like to discuss.

If I were the decision-maker on something like that, for sure. But that is way above me. They have been doing something comparable at kstp.com with the community sites. Certainly, you have the power to post stuff in the U of M neighborhood site. But as for video, are you an expert shooter? Could we get you a media pass? Lots of layers.

I'm suggesting you may want to advocate for a different model of coverage. We're probably one product generation away from having mobile devices capable of providing near-HD quality video. Why have a dedicated and expensive staff of shooters? Your quality may take a hit, but will probably not substantially worse than the video used for coverage of high school games. And who needs a press pass? Interviews with coaches and players are nice to have, but not a necessity. With 5,000 to 55,000 people in the seats, 50%+ of whom with a video-capable mobile device, the U is going to have a tricky time preventing video capture of the event.

I get your point, man. There are a lot of obstacles to using this model. But any information on the event, say a one-minute recap with no video, will be infinitely better than not being able to provide any coverage due to resource constraints.

Agree. This sort of model is not far from full-reality, and in some ways, is already a reality. But once any station goes in on an idea like this, they need to go all-in. Can't just be for Gophers. Some obstacles like: how would you get the video to us? How can I then get it into my computer for editing purposes? Does something like this take away from your ability to fully enjoy the game? ... need to be figured out ... but I am not scoffing at the idea. The media business is changing left-and-right. I fully understand that.

Well, it's too bad the closest station didn't cover it at all. Serious question to you and all : What radio station has done the best at getting players and coaches on? What TV station has spent the most minute/seconds of air time? What paper is doing a better job of covering Gophers?

I get tweets from various Big Ten schools media, Minnesota coverage is still pretty poor overall.

Radio: Probably 'CCO ... it helps that Brewster is contractually obligated to join for 30-min. every Sunday. Do remember: the other two stations put in requests that are not always satisfied. Sometimes coaches/players are busy, say no, etc.

TV: By my count, we were at more spring practices, and did more from late March-late April than the 3 other stations combined. So far this summer, probably about a tie among all of us. The one(s) that were there yest. obviously had us beat. As documented above, a desk photog got pulled last second. Sometimes in our department, we are at the mercy of others.

Paper: about even ... but probably the Strib. I personally make MV's site my first stop most days.

Also nemosgold: do the Madison TV stations have 4 professional teams to cover? How 'bout Iowa City TV stations, etc.? We also have a commitment with Ch. 45 and its high school coverage rights in the family, to do a certain amount of high school stories. Can only be stretched in so many directions. The work ethic of nobody on the sports side here at Ch. 5 can be questioned. Sometimes decisions on what to cover have to be made.

Good point. I've found the Iowa guy to post the most info, he even unofficially collect stats and made player by player comments on the two deeps after last Saturdays scrimmage.

Yes, but your coverage was a practice, PRACTICE... This was a game (well a scrimmage/practice game..). Enough AI jokes...

It does seem obvious that the stations would cover the game like scrimmage, it is just strange that your station didn't see it as important, thus you got scooped.

Not sure we got scooped when we were well aware of it... we talked, and decided to give our guys a break after back-to-back 12-14 hour Favre days (working through our 11p newscast)... it was very vanilla for obvious reasons... in a perfect world, we would've been there.

Doogie, covering Favre that much is rediculous!! Media thinks it's that impt, but most people think it's overboard. How was the party Fri. nite???

Correct on media... but the local TV ratings for Tues. and Wed. nearly tripled for every station ... he drives monster numbers. I did Twins Wrap til 12 am ... we just headed to Cooper ... love it there.

Doogie, Questions and reasons

First the questions. Who is the sports producer? Assignment Editor? And do they have email addresses?

Now the reasons KSTP should cover all Gopher practices and games.

1. You are the closest to the Stadium
2. You are an ABC affiliate that carries the Big 10 Games.
3. Stanley Hubbard is a University of Minnesota Alumni.
4. Why watch, why not just go to MV's blog.

And here is one for the assignment editor, why send you to cover the Saints? Who had the bigger attendance? The Gophers. Who has a bigger following, The Gophers. What was the bigger story? The Gophers.

And at either 5 or 6 the sports ended with some sports clip of someting stupid, so he could throw it back to anchors as they were laughing.

I have been setting the DVR to 5 since you promised the best coverage. I may have to delete that.

James Monical ([email protected]) or I ([email protected]) come up with ideas, and assign them just about every day. Obviously, Joe Schmit has a big say as the head of the department as well.
The Saints is a side-job I have. They are incredibly great people who welcomed me with open arms after KFAN let me go. I help broadcast 12-15 games per season for them, and Sat. was one of them.
What does Mr. Hubbard's alma-mater have to do with anything? In my time there (late 90's and now), he's never encouraged coverage of a certain team or individual.
Being close to the stadium definitely helps sometimes, just like Ch. 9 benefits from being within walking distance of the Vikings... but shooting video takes a special talent. Only a select few in the building know how to do it, so it's usable... if the bodies aren't available, there isn't much that can be done. TV has the most moving parts of any medium. Newspaper guys grab their laptop and that's it. With TV, need to have a good shooter who knows good lighting, then someone who knows what they're doing editing-wise once the video is back in-house.
