If you don't want to get hit, don't play football.

I didn't catch everything, as I was at the game, but when I read the game thread later, there were some comments that Wells' hit was dirty. I don't see it that way. Even though Maye is on the ground, that dude is still running full speed toward him. He had a chance to pull up and didn't.

Funniest part about the video is towards the end. Their coaches and players are on the field and there's a scrum in the middle. As they pan back, you can see Hageman walking alone from their sideline. It's obvious no one wanted any part of him.

It wasn't dirty, it was cheap and stupid. Wells knew Maye was already on the ground, still took a shot at a player for no reason. In most games, Wells would have drawn a PF penalty, and in the ensuing scrum the Gophers could have easily lost a player or two to ejection.

It was a dumb play, and there's no way Kill and staff aren't telling him the same thing right now.

Looked like a bang bang play. Onside kick? Was that why punter was on kickoff team?

If you watch the video with the volume up, you won't hear the whistle until just before the hit was made. Wells was facing away from Maye so he didn't know for sure what was going on, and then this guy comes flying in. Maybe I've got my maroon and gold glasses on, but it seems to me that it was just a football play.

+1 that was my thought as well. If you read the story on the link on MWCConnection about the punter having a short fuse, it makes it even more entertaining.

That definitely was hilarious. He was walking among multiple white jerseys with absolutely no fear.

We sit right behind the Gopher bench. When Wells came off the coaches didn't say a thing. It was a bang, bang play before the whistle blew.

I guarantee they coach Wells or anyone on that team to surround the recovered ball and protect the player that recovered it. That was a well executed recovery plain and simple.
The punter ran in even though he saw Maye down, if anything the punter was going to do something stupid and hit Maye. Wells did his job and a good one at that.

You play to the whistle. And your teammate is on the ground. He gave him a shoulder to reroute the punter at the last second. He didn't take a stance and plant him, or flip him. No foul. I noted the Band firing up Minnesota Fight!

Nothing wrong with that play. The dude was running at Wells full speed towards him. Wells just exerted such little effort in knocking him on his a$$ that it makes it look worse than it really is. I have no problem with it and neither should that punter or whatever he was. He plays football also.

He's a punter. If he's a real football player, he doesn't get lit up and there's no issue.

The hit wasn't necessary, but it was legal.

Hindsight is 20/20. Re-watch the video from the perspective of Wells. Ball is at his back and the whistle goes off literally milliseconds before the hit was made. He's doing exactly what he was coached to do, protect the ball.

Yeah, I'm not sure what he thought was gonna happen when he continued charging toward Maye with Wells standing right there. The initial charge with his helmet probably is what took him out actually, cause the rest of it really wasn't a big deal. But it wouldn't even have been anything had he not flipped out like that.

Re-watched it several times last night. No doubt, it was a bang-bang play. Not as stupid as I originally commented, still somewhat unnecessary for the most part. Two final comments; the fact that it was the punter/KO man makes no difference, my opinion would be the same. Not sure why people feel the need to belabor the point that he's a punter. Second, to the point about him rushing into the play with Maye already on the ground; why is that any different than many KO teams that are taught to run all the way to the end zone and directly towards the ball, even on a fair catch on a KO in the end zone? It was an onside kick, and the ball is almost always loose; if anything it was odd the KO man was the ONLY man for SJSU running all the way to the ball.

I'll concede it was neither cheap nor stupid, but at the least it was unnecessary. In a different game with the wrong ref, they could be looking at 15 yards, or worse.

Exactly. If he's a real football player, he doesn't take offense at getting hit.

I'm sorry, Bad, but that's ridiculous. That play happens, in some form or another, on a huge percentage of KO's and special teams plays and there's almost always some pushing and shoving afterwards. You can't honestly tell me that there isn't another player on the field that wouldn't have jumped up and got in Wells' face there, not one?

I think part of the reason he got back up and in Wells' face was because he got absolutely planted. It was kinda embarrassing. I think that if it weren't a punter, he wouldn't have gotten crushed as much.

The punter going after Wells was like a dog chasing a car. What are you gonna do if you catch it?

We can all agree though that if he were playing in the NFL, he'd be a "shoe-in" for the All-Madden team.

I knew somebody would say this. Pushing and shoving is one thing. Nobody wants to be planted, so you get up and get in their face. Being offended by someone playing football with you and starting a fight is a whole 'nother universe of behavior.
