"The chatter here in the Twin Cities seems to center on the fact that Minnesota dared play a game in which it almost didn’t complete a single pass. Gophers’ backup quarterback Chris Streveler was 1 of 7 for just seven yards, that lone completion coming midway through the fourth quarter to draw sarcastic cheers.
The argument I’m seeing is centered on, How can Minnesota compete in the Big Ten if it has next to no passing game? That’s probably a valid concern, although I’m not entirely surprised with the game plan they went with.
I joined the Minnesota radio pregame show yesterday (actually, it was taped on Thursday and aired yesterday) and they asked what I thought Minnesota would try to do in this game. My response was that they would be extremely run heavy. The run is their bread and butter and they knew they could execute on the ground against SJSU and, let’s not forget this, the Spartans have the looks of a very good secondary. I need to see a few more games around the Mountain West, but it may be the best secondary in the conference or at least in the top two or three.
You saw what happened when they did pass. Five of Minnesota’s seven passes were defended, either by an interception (Forrest Hightower) or pass breakups (Two for Jimmy Pruitt, one each for Cleveland Wallace III and Maurice McKnight).
So really, the Gophers had the chance to play to their strength and avoid the Spartans’ strength and win a game. Pretty simple, even if Jerry Kill is getting railed for it a little bit back here in the Midwest.."

Right on. Did what needed to be done to win, while healing some injuries.
Passing could have easily been 3 or 4/7 with 1 TD, and you would have heard no complaints.
