Am interested to see who gets the Rutgers job. The coach will enter a truly unique situation. It's essentially a Big Ten job, but with a 1-year pit stop in the American Athletic Conference (old Big East). Despite the bad publicity caused my Mike Rice's actions, this isn't a bad job, IMO. Rutgers hasn't been to the tournament since 1991 (wow), but unlike Penn State and Northwestern I've always had the impression they have a loyal fan base that genuinely craves basketball success. The RAC usually seems like it has pretty good energy, despite their basketball struggles.

Ben Howland has apparently expressed interest.

Howland would be a really good fit there, I think. Already used to the East Coast from his time at Pitt.

Ben Howland would be an absolute grand slam hire given how bad that team is and the current PR disaster they are in. I would sign him up immediately if he's willing to take the job.

They probably want to get an AD before making any offers, but the first call the new guy should make is to Howland if he's actually interested.

Dan Monson to resurrect Rutgers program?

Howland gets $2.3 million from UCLA if he doesn't work for a year... that amount goes down by any compensation earned elsewhere. Not sure I'd be all that excited to jump at the Rutgers job if I'm Howland... besides the money issue, probably would have several options next spring.

If that is Howland's buy out term, then the guy is a damned fool to "coach for the sake of coaching."

If I get two point three to not coach, or get two point three split between parties, I'll take the year off.

I'm just not sure I can see Howland coaching again, especially Ruthers. I believe the word used though was that he was intrigued by the Rutgers job.

If I am Howland, I am currently getting paid to do nothing and I get paid the exact same amount if I am working. (As GW mentioned)

If I am Rutgers, I just fired an abusive coach the players hated. Is a guy with a scathing article about him from SI out there a hire I want to make? When he was borderline abusive?

The thing with Howland, IMO, isn't that he underachieved at UCLA. Its that he took a massive PR hit and his players legitimately seemed to hate playing for him.

Maybe he just needs a fresh start though, and Rutgers isn't exactly able to be picky at this point.

Which is exactly why I nominated Dan Monson. :)

Well you're half way there Doc. You've got the year off.

Anyone catch the SNL skit with Melissa McCarthy as a female version of the Rutgers' coach? Pretty funny stuff.

You might have to register with hulu to watch, but I think it's worth checking out.

How about Melissa McCarthy - she was terrific on the parody of Rutgers on SNL!

SNL should do a skit, I bet it would be funny!

The woman hired to clean up Rutgers' scandal-scarred athletic program quit as Tennessee's women's volleyball coach 16 years ago after her players submitted a letter complaining she ruled through humiliation, fear and emotional abuse, The Star-Ledger reported Saturday night on its website.

In the letter submitted by all 15 team members, the players said Hermann called them "whores, alcoholics and learning disabled" and they wrote: "It has been unanimously decided that this is an irreconcilable issue."

Go Gophers!!

Wow that athletic dept. is a mess. Who vetted that hire?

I can't wait for the newest member of the B1G to join the league next year. What a terrific addition!

What a mess. My guess is she'll quietly resign the Rutgers AD job. Wasn't she going to be the first woman AD in Division 1? Rutgers needed to make a slam dunk hire at AD and they got a mess instead. Someone should tell them Macturi is available...
