per Heather Rule:

The Gophers won big again Wednesday, 85-56 over Mount St. Mary’s.

It gives them a 3-0 start for the first time since 2013-14. It’s a small sample size, obviously, but there’s plenty of room for encouragement. The Gophers have victories by 12-, 17- and 24-point margins so far.

They also already have a longer winning streak than all of last year. Not tough to do, but it’s something. Because as the ol’ saying goes: A win’s a win. Even head coach Richard Pitino spoke to that adage after Wednesday’s victory.

“The most important thing is we got the win,” he said.

Just five more victories to tie last year’s overall record. That’s still a good bottom line, regardless of the opponents or whatever excuses are used as to how the Gophers could possibly be 3-0.

Speaking of that, it’s obviously still very early. The Big Ten season isn’t here yet. Then fans will really get a chance to see what this team is made of this year, and hope for a Big Ten record better than last year’s 2-16. This is probably why some fans might not be impressed yet. It’s also tough to get excited about a program that won just eight games last season. Attendance at the barn already dipped below the 8,000-mark the past couple games.
