Your dad was one of best tackling DBs ever. You’re a heck of a tackler at the college level. What did he teach you about tackling?
WINFIELD JR.: He always taught me the basics, ever since I was a little kid. Mostly, that was to come down and run through your man. That’s the simplest way to put it. Don’t hesitate, get down low and run through them. You’ve got pads on, so you’ll be fine.
Your punt return for a touchdown on Thursday night went viral. Take us through that return.
WINFIELD JR.: After I caught the ball, I ran near the seam. Then a defender hit me. I felt it and spun out of it. After I spun there were two more defenders and I tried to run through them. I bounced off them, then saw open space so I took off running and there was a defender to my right and I stiff-armed him. Then it was into the end zone. It was amazing. It was my first time doing punt returns at the college level.
You considered leaving this program two years ago after being falsely accused in a high-profile sexual assault case in which a number of Gophers players were investigated.
what made you decide to stay here?
WINFIELD JR.: After we got a new coaching staff (in January of 2017) and I met coach (P.J.) Fleck, and he told me about his vision, I was on board with it. I knew he had a whole lot of passion and energy for the game. When I came back up here to meet him, I was able to see what the coaching staff was like, and I totally bought in.
What’s it like so far to play for coach P.J. Fleck?
WINFIELD JR.: It’s fun. All of the passion and energy and love that he brings to us, we (play) for him. He always brings energy to us and we reciprocate it. It’s so fun to play for him. You can’t get tired of his personality. It is one in a million.
