When the Gophers lose, the coach criticizes some players who can't change their games.

Tubby Smith's ballclub had not won a Big Ten game since it went to Iowa City on Feb. 13 and cruised to a 62-45 victory. On Wednesday night, 325 days since that victory, Iowa came to Williams Arena for a visit in which Tubby's athletes had the task of proving this was not another conference campaign headed for the doldrums.

The Gophers had opened Big Ten play with narrow losses at Illinois and at Michigan.

The expectation was the Gophers would be invigorated by a return to The Barn, where they were 10-0 in nonconference games -- mostly vs. suspect competition, but still 10-0.

There were decades when Ralph Miller, Lute Olson, George Raveling and Tom Davis brought the Hawkeyes to Minneapolis and the cheer "Let's Go Hawks" would roll down incessantly from the upper reaches of The Barn.

Those days were long gone, when Steve Alford turned this proud program in the wrong direction, and then Todd Lickliter turned Iowa basketball into a disgrace.

Lickliter was fired in 2010, with four years left on a seven-year contract, and the Hawkeyes hired Fran McCaffrey from Siena. Iowa was 11-20 in 2010-11, giving it a fourth consecutive losing season for the first time in school history.

On Saturday, the Hawkeyes came out of Wisconsin with a shocking 72-65 victory -- primarily because the Badgers went 3-for-28 from behind the three-point line.

This Big Ten home opener for the Gophers started with Iowa playing what came to be known as "Lickliter ball" to grateful opponents. The Hawkeyes were missing from all distances, getting beat off the dribble, and the Gophers led 32-21 when McCaffrey called an emergency timeout with 5:06 left in the first half.

It wouldn't be fair to say Williams Arena was rocking, because that doesn't really happen these days, but the announced crowd of 12,018 was satisfied -- with the exception of the occasional hoots aimed at Ralph Sampson III, the senior center.

The Hawkeyes went to a zone, not McCaffrey's preferred defense, but he had to do something.

The Gophers looked at the new defense as if they had been handed a pop quiz in calculus, and didn't score the rest of the half. Iowa closed with 10 in a row, and it was 32-31 at halftime.

The second half mostly belonged to Iowa -- until it missed six free throws in the final 39 seconds. The Gophers had a chance to tie before the buzzer, when Maverick Ahanmisi failed to twist in a layup.

Hawks 64, Gophers 62.

Last winter, when things turned ugly, Smith started sending arrows in the direction of Blake Hoffarber, a senior playing out of position at point guard.

Suddenly, the coach was saying that Hoffarber could not settle for jump shots but had to be more aggressive in taking the ball toward the basket. Interesting theory ... since Hoffarber's game for 3 1/2 seasons had been firing from distance with a lightning-fast trigger.

The 6-11 Sampson has been a target for The Barn's spectators for most of his time here. The fans have wanted to see power and aggression from Ralph the Third, even as it became clear his game was shooting 17-foot jumpers, playing a high-low game with the now-injured Trevor Mbakwe and blocking shots.

Moving his feet and handling the ball in traffic always have been problems for big Ralph, and they got him in trouble again Wednesday. He had six turnovers, four rebounds and missed a lone free throw in a 12-point night.

There was enough disappointment in this loss that Tubby decided to go back to slinging arrows. Two days earlier, he had offered praise for Sampson, but now he was trying to explain another loss and said of Ralph the Third:

"He has to be stronger with the ball. He has to go strong to the basket and not settle for jumpers."

Sampson has a better chance to make a jumper than to go strong through traffic to get a basket, but this was another gut-wrenching loss and Tubby needed a Hoffarber for a new winter.

When you're a coach with a big reputation and a big contract, everything is fair game -- including questioning a player who can't seem to change his game halfway through a senior season.

Patrick Reusse can be heard noon-4 weekdays on 1500ESPN.

hmmm......reusse's weak quotes and research in this so-called "article" read an awful lot like somebody who posts here on GH and stuff that was posted on here last night. almost verbatim. sure you don't read or post on gopherhole, reusse. turd.

Tubby is right. Ralph can't handle a double so either make a move or get rid of the ball. Fat Pat needs to just shut up because he doesn't know anything about basketball.

Tubby coaches Ralph and has for 4 years. He also plays Ralph serious minutes and has not recruited a player he feels is worthy of playing more. Ralph has not developed in the weight room. The thing Ralph has done is improve his shooting. Ralph does not want to play center - period. I don't think Tubby threw ralph under the bus here- but I do think Tubby needs to take a hard look at his own role in this and his assistant staff's role.

Pat's article and Tubby's comments aside, Ralph simply needs to be able to catch the freakin' ball.

I'm curious about how all of the following factors play into whether Mo Walker is red shirted this year.

1. A quickly spiraling season... Tubby is on the hot seat... may feel the need to show results now.
2. Our flimsy inside the paint game... Ralph Sampson prefers to play on the perimeter.
3. Mo's feelings on the 'to redshirt or to not redshirt' question. Maybe this is a question for Selection Sunday. Do players even get a say in the redshirt decision by the way?

I personally think that Mo could be a big factor in stopping the bleeding this year. I have mixed feelings about him being held out this year.

Worthless

I've become pretty much in line with GopherWarrior's thinking with regards to Mo's redshirting, or any potential redshirt for that matter. If the kid is healthy, he can help you now, you're short at his position (which we are) & they want to play, play 'em now.

It would be nice to know with certainty that we'll have Mo for 3 full years after this season, but nothing in the future is promised. Guys have academic problems, get hurt, transfer from major programs & leave early for the pro ranks all the time. There's no guarantee Mo will even be around in 2014-15 to use that extra year.

I used to think redshirt him, but after last night and hearing others opinions. I am starting to sway and agree with you. I think Mo is a lot better than people on this board give him credit for, and he already gets some good credit. If he is in good shape, he could be pretty good for us.

Your point is right on. Reusse's columns are normally meandering and almost always heavy on "days gone by."

That said, I'm sure he doesn't write the headline.

Any article that references Ralph Miller is a good article

I actually enjoy Reusse and his sarcastic sniping of the Gopher Basketball program. It is time to face the facts here that this team is a joke. Clearly Smith has lost his ability to coach his players. Do you think Ralph Sampson the great NBA player would baby his son for being a complete air head on the court at all times? I don't think so! Tubby clearly does not care anymore about anyone playing on this team. The plays he does run on the offensive end are completely worthless, and worth ripping on. Mav taking the ball in during the last seconds? Hmm how about Sampson, Williams with his athleticism, or Welch for a game winning three? And on defense, I can believe Smith cannot see that a zone of any kind would work against a team like Iowa! Instead he sticks with man to man. It is just simply time to let Smith have the rest of this season, and if we do not make the NCAA oust him.

All of those guys you said should have taken the shot didn't even do something to get the ball from Mav so what do you expect Mav to do just stand there

I would expect the team to try to run a play to get somebody open so Mav does not have to fire up a desperation layup as PG. It is 5th grade basketball.

4 seconds to go full-court does not give enough time to run a play...

Somebody could have at least tried to run a quick screen. True 4 seconds is not that much time taking the ball down court, but remember that shot by Hoffarber with .5 seconds to go vs. Indiana, was that just luck, or did the team get him open? This all just falls on the teams lack of interest in the games, and the coach. They have lost their fire to play hard, and grind games out. Too many bad breaks for this team. Always being in these last second situations and losing takes the players hearts away. The schemes run by Tubby at the end of games are the problems. It is pathetic!

Oh and that layup should have been made also...I truly believe that anyone else on the team would have made that layup. I would have liked to see Welch in that situation. He wanted to redeem himself for the Illinois blunder.

You don't get out much do you. Tubby was quoted after the game saying he had the play drawn up for Welch to take the shot but the players didn't execute it. Heck they weren't even on that end of the floor.

If I were coach this squad- 8 seconds to go an I'm looking at a situation where we are going to have to go end to end in that time frame- I want Chip Armelin on the floor. Welch would be my number one go to guy- but Armelin would be in the mix. Was Coleman on the floor? He's another candidate.

Any of you guys that think Minnesota is going to fire Tubby Smith is CRAZY! They are not going to fire a coach that has had alot of transfer and injuries that have caused problems the last 2 seasons. Now, if they hadn't had those problems and kept losing and not making the tournament, then I can see making adjustments, but not now. Maybe Tubby changes the way he recruits to be able to sustain problems in the near future, this is the first time he has had many issues like this. Time will tell.
