U's Royston, after broken leg, plans to play in football opener

Two broken bones, two surgeries and a titanium rod in his leg will not keep Gophers safety Kim Royston on the sidelines this football season -- or even out of training camp.
Gophers coach Tim Brewster said Wednesday that Royston, who broke both the fibula and tibia in his lower left leg during spring practice, is running again and will take part, in a reduced role at first, when two-a-days begin for the Gophers on Aug. 6.
"Our full expectation is that Kim will play in our season opener Sept. 2 [against Middle Tennessee State]," Brewster said. "He's come a long way already."
The senior safety, who had 86 tackles and an interception last season, was feared lost for the year when he suffered compound fractures after falling awkwardly during an April 13 workout. But surgeons inserted a rod into his leg to stabilize the break, and Royston has had a smooth recovery.
"He's worked very hard to get back in time for the season," said Brewster, who plans to ease Royston back into action, in part by limiting him to one workout a day during fall drills. "This is a mentally tough young man."
TOUGH ENOUGH TO LEAD! GO GOPHERS!
